  • This week I finally managed to book cinema tickets using the Orange Wednesday promotion. Some of you may remember I bought a cheap mobile especially for this purpose...

At over £12 per ticket for a movie in the West End, I'm pleased to report that the phone (bought for £10, with £5 cashback via Topcashback) has paid for itself after the first visit :D. I felt very pleased with myself. Especially as I passed by Tescos on the way home and bought a big piece of sirloin steak for £5.30, reduced from £8.50 (which I promptly turned into 4x MSE dishes, now nestling in the freezer).

In fact, the only issue of the evening was the state of the ladies' washroom, which was utterly revolting . I don't mind shabby decor, but I do expect a clean loo and toilet paper!!! I mentioned this to the manager on the way out, primarily so he could get someone down there to tidy up, but instead he apologised and gave us 2 free tickets. Totally unexpected, but a very nice gesture I thought.

Received a £75 payment for participating in an on-line focus group last week. Straight into the bank - £25 to put some petrol in the car and the other £50 into the repayment pot!

Sometimes, it seems like the more I try to save, the more I end up spending...

Earlier this week, I dropped by my local Asda on the off chance of picking up a few whoopsies, however, I emerged £20 poorer, having discovered I could get 3x packets of medallion steaks for £9, 2x packets of bacon for £4, 4x £1 packets of frozen foods for £3 etc. The meat was cheaper per packet if I bought three fresh ones than just the one whoopsie, so I thought I should stock up.

I also managed to pick up a big bag of stock veggies for less than half price, along with half price parsnips and a bag of half price leeks...

This evening, I have had a mammoth cooking session. There's a big casserole doing its business overnight in the slow-cooker with half the meat and I'm just waiting for my leek, ginger and parsnip soup to finish off so I can go to bed.

Tomorrow I have to turn the other half of the meat into something else. It's likely to be curry. Lots of meals for my freezer, but I must try and do more for less. My car tax renewal reminder arrived this morning (£190) plus my first bill from E-On, which is asking for £75 for the first five days of March :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

    Update for April 2010
As this month marks the fourth anniversary since I took out my mortgage product, I can make a 5% overpayment in addition to the 'normal' one (which itself is artificially high, 'cos I drastically shortened the term a few months ago).

Hence this month’s update is rosier than usual, and the scores on the doors are now as follows:
    Actual payments: Jan, £3,980; Feb, £3,980; Mar, £3,980; April £8,900 (Total = £20,850)
    Original scheduled payments: Jan, £645; Feb, £645; Mar, £645; April £645 (Total = £2,582)
    Payment over/above original estimate: Jan, £3,338; Feb, £3,338; Mar, £3,338; April £8,254 (Total = £18,268)
Interest per day: Jan, £6.55; Feb, £6.13; Mar, £5.47; April £4.37
Mortgage balance: Jan, £51,230: Feb, £47,430; Mar, £43,620; April £35,260
% of mortgage now paid off: Jan, 48.77%; Feb 52.57%; Mar, 56.38%; April 64.7%
% of house now owned outright: Jan, 91.74%; Feb 92.35%; Mar, 92.97%; April 94.31%

Other news is that my lodger has handed in her notice, which leaves a big hole in my monthly cashflow!!! I'm hoping that someone equally nice comes along soon to take her place...

Until I find a new lodger, I need to really batten down the hatches on the costs-front.

Consequently, I've set myself the challenge this week of living entirely out of my store-cupboard/freezer, with the possible exception of fresh milk.

This morning, I discovered I'd run out of bread - cue porridge for breakfast and there's now a loaf in the breadmaker! Just about to pop a baked spud in the oven for lunch. And this evening I have a committee meeting for a voluntary group I attend, so that's a MSE supper in the offing.

Lack of sweetie things this week is bound to drive me bonkers, but will do wonders for my waistline...

I may be on larder rations this week, but I've just had the satisfaction of seeing my mortgage payment for May hit my account. It's now down to just under £31k... Next month, there'll be a '2' in front of it!

I'll think about this as I gradually chomp my way through the tins of beans in my store cupboard and curries in my freezer!!
