I'm just amazed how much potentional that little router in your hall has.
From VPNs to CCTV, wireless to online gaming, never mind admining the network, it's an astonishing powerful little box....

It's not the "webmaster" now, it's the "routermaster" who has the kudos.

They are a couple of budget laptops, Asus Eeepc, Acer aspire. Do they do them for Xbox live?

For the Asus, see this link for wireless compatibility-some of the eepc's are 'N'.

    There are 6 different eepc 900's...sadly they're all 'G'
Acer Aspire 4920 seems to be 'G'.

Why does it matter that they're 'only G'? Their data transfer rate will be many times that of your ISP line, which will be the bottleneck!

True, but his priority might be moving data around the local network. Little point in buying a wireless 'N' router and then hooking it up to slower adapters in that case.
Of course, he might be on Virgin's 50MBps service...

That would be cable, he uses Namesco.

  • It's already been said, but you won't have any issues with that router.

    I have the same one.

My son uses his wireless XBOX on it all the time.

I have bought this router http://www.netgear.co.uk/dgn2000.php on line and just want to check that I have bought the correct one for our needs, it is replacing an old Thomson speedtouch router.

It will plug into the telephone socket

    wired in desktop xp
2 wireless laptops xp and Vista
    wireless desktop xp
    Xbox live

I don't want to open the box unless I am sure it is going to work,(I was confident last week)
what is worrying me is that it says on the box ADSL2+ , I'm not sure what this means, it also says use with Rangemax wireless N adapters and boost your perfomance and range.
We will have a variety of wireless adaptors so I presume it will still work.
I think I just need reassurance that it will be okay.
    Thanks

I replaced my speed touch with a Tenda WD300 which I bought as a "bargain" of the net. It was difficult to set up and very unreliable. Got the same router as OP from John Lewis just in case I needed to take it back. It worked perfectly, easy to set up and no problems to date (touch wood!).
