Thanks Nasa...call me daft but does the above mean I should be claiming in a few months when the extent of the Down's is clearer or claim now so the 1st payment can be made when he's old enough?

I don't want anyone to think I'm just after the money, I want him to get it so we can put it into his bank account to help him out in the future so I want to apply when we've got the best chance of success.
You have a fairly wide window at the minute. You can claim in advance and you can also claim in arrears. You can, I think, backdate up to three months.

The link that BCS posted above should prove helpful.

I'd definitely have a look at Survivor's link as it's disability specific. You could apply now but you may have to reapply fairly regularly in his early life.

I've had a quick look and yeah, it seems like I'd need to reapply every few months.

I think he needs more care than our daughter did at that age, would I need to get a doctor to confirm anything?

I don't know what to do for the best.

    Just a quick update...

Phoned to get a form sent out so that'll be here in about 2weeks. I wanted to be organised by the time it arrives so I tried to make an appointment with the CAB but the number was busy the couple of times I tried to call and DIAL couldn't offer any assistance so I'll nip to the council office in the next couple of days to see if there's someone there that might be able to help when the form arrives.

Also, I just wanted to say thanks again for the really useful replies I received!

People are given confusing information about when they should make a first claim for
    the care component of DLA.

Three months is usually the earliest that it is possible to get DLA because of the
qualifying periods - see page 24 of these guidelines. (You may be able to get it
earlier if your child is very ill - see “The special rules”, page 24). Some children with
Down's syndrome do get DLA at 3 months.

We suggest that the earliest you send in the claim form is when your child is 3
months old. This stops the DWP refusing you simply because "your child hasn't
satisfied the qualifying period". It also gives you a chance to get to know your child
    and their developing needs.

When you decide to claim will depend on your child. Children with Down's syndrome are not all the same. You need to ask yourself if your child needs more care than most other children of the same age (see “The care component - the rules”, page 10 of these guidelines). We feel that most parents claim sometime between 3 months and 1 year old.

There is also a 6 month Residence and Presence test to satisfy

    Part of the Furniture
    Evening All,

I'm trying to fill out an online form on behalf my son. He is only 10weeks old so I'm struggling to answer some of the questions.

Would I be better waiting until he's older to fill out the form so I can answer the questions or just leave them blank and see what happends?

Thanks in adavance for any replies!

We are just doing the forms for our 1 year old with DS, how did you get on? Did you hear the interview with Maz on BBC radio 5 live this week? I hope our boy turns out like her... Cheers.

  • You will probably find your health visitor will assist with the form completion or refer you to an agency that can help. It is important that you put on the form the extra things you do because ofyour childs disabilities that you wouldnt do for a child without problems. for instance with the problems feeding the extra time taken, also if you hav eto do any physiotherapy exercises to increase the childs upper body strength etc...any professionals involved should be ableto give you advice about additional support, input etc or provide evidence if requested.
    Good luck with the claim.
  • I'll put my neck on the line now, talking to the threads author, but as soon as you put down your little uns condition he should qualify for care and I believe at 4 a rate of the mobility rate. Been a few years since I saw a claim form but it must surely say what condition/illness do you suffer from.

Hope it goes well and the young lad gets what he deserves.
