yes got to agree its theft, I know a guy who surfs around housing estates looking for an unlocked wifi and always finds one.

take a laptop to McDonalds and get on line for free or go to Virgin and get a 1Gb dongle for £5.00 a month I have one and it does all that I want it to when I am on the road which is to get at sites for manuals email etc and could also do video conference i would have thought so try that option first as they give you a months trial to see if it does for you what you want it to.
  • Can't they just come over to your house to use your setup - it sounds as though they wouldn't know how to use it themselves without you there anyway. I'm sure it wouldn't be so often that it would be an inconvenience for either of you.

Also, not only is it illegal for you to steal a neighbour's wifi, it is also illegal for them to share it so you may get them cut off from their ISP - don't forget they must be immediate neighbours as wifi doesn't go that far so it could be quite awkward.

Why not find out who it is and ask if they mind them using it for a short call ?

oh go for it, it won't be for long they prob switch it off to save power, etc. or the people in the world send you to gaol. Its free like the air and the blackberries down the lane, never been scrumping? Full of meanies here. Next time don't ask, just keep stum.

It's not like taking apples from a tree, it's like using someone's telephone without asking.

Especially in these days of capped internet connections. If my phone tarrif gives me 50 free minutes a month and you come along and make a 25 minute call, I'm not going to be very happy about it.

You shouldn't do it, it's illegal yes... But I have to say unless it's a bank, the police won't be interested.

Just don't go onto any high profile forums telling half a million people what your up to! oh.... ooops!

Torrents only need an outgoing port which are usually open by default so I doubt you can block them. I checked and your router seems to support QOS so if you read up on that you may be able to allocate less bandwidth to his machine or maybe even non-html protocols if the feature support is comprehensive enough.

OK everyone, Thanks for all your advice. I'm not going to do it anyway now. It was supposed to be for this weekend as it is FiL birthday, but he has now been admitted to the Hospice ( he's terminally ill, thats why he couldn't come to my house). I am going to ask if the hospice has free access, if not, then its just too bad. I will look into the Dongle idea though. Thanks again.
