no i wasnt. When gmail first went live, everyone got a @gmail.com account, even in UK. Now as the OP said, only people outside do. Those who got the account before 'the change' still have @gmail.com.

I get all my new to the net mates to try out gmail for their web email.

the above post is very useful ... it details how people in the UK can get a @gmail.com address as opposed to @googlemail.com

OK, still a bit confused.... Currently if anyone wants e-mail access I either set them up with Tiscali (if they need an ISP as well) or Hotmail (if they have access but don't want an OE-based e-mail system). How does g-mail improve on this? (My teenage son did explain this to me when g-mail 1st appeared - something to do with a 'closed-club' sort of thing?..) but as it's re-appeared I figured I ought to take a bit more notice?..

    TIA John

Yes its closed club (although 100 invites per user) but gmail is generally a better product than hotmail. Some will disagree with this but some things are for sure -

gmail loads much quicker than hotmail
gmail offers a load more space than hotmail (2GB and growing each day)
forwarding facilities, out of office facility
and most importantly, a nicer clear interface, not cluttered up by flashing adverts. No picture ads at all on there.

Makes me want to delete my msn account right now, but I'll keep it just incase :)

Gmail has a very different way of dealing with your emails. Such as storing old messages and recalling them automatically when you get another email from that person so you can read all the old messages as well as the new one. You also get loads of storage. Have a look at here and here

The spam protection is also first class. Far better that other email systems.

Mine works with both: gmail.com and googlemail.com!

I have an "old" gmail account and also a "new" googemail account, but I always give my address as xxx@gmail.com for both accounts and my messages always get through.
