Paypal: A cautionary tale

Hi Alex99,
BFG is right,
Would we be correct in thinking that your Paypal account is linked / paid by credit card ?
I think it is as if it was linked / paid by debit card then you would be paying by what Paypal call a `pending e cheque` and that takes a week or so to clear.
As BFG says even though you have not directly paid the seller by credit card but the fact that you have paid Paypal by credit card means that you are covered.
If you have used a debit card to settle your Paypal account then things will be more difficult but you need not give up with this route.

Hmmm
It appears that my PP account draws from a debit card.
I gave PP my credit card details and thought they were using that, but I also gave them my current account / debit card details (so I could sell some stuff on ebay) and it appears that they have used that instead of my credit card.
My debit card is VISA so there may be "chargeback" protection.
I shall try making a claim against my debit card company and report back here on what they say.
Meanwhile Paypal have been back in touch to admit that we did make a complaint within 45 days after all, but they are still not going to do anything about my complaint. They suggest - yet again - that I continue to communicate with the seller whereas the whole point of my recent correspondence with them was that the seller is not responding to communications.
As I have noted before, Paypal consistently fail to read emails before replying to them.
Thanks to everyone who has made supportive suggestions!0 -
But my understanding at the moment is that you lose Section 75 protection if you buy using Paypal drawn on your credit card?
It depends.............
Strictly speaking [FSA ruling] using paypal breaks the merchant/buyer/ccc triangle [ie yopu're using your cc to buy 'emoney' with paypal and since thats been 'successful', the ccc is off the hook - so sec 75 doesn't apply, however....
Some ccc's will allow sec 75 claims against paypal
You can do a chargeback [bt paypal may freeze your acct and boot you off ebay]
BTW - if you purchase using a BIN you have full DSR protection [buy it now and Distance Selling regs...lol]0 -
It seems that the funds in question were taken by Paypal using a direct debit arrangement. They also had our CC details. I have now removed both from PP's site.
Our current account holders have said that they can put through "a direct debit indemnity if you are certain these funds should not have been DEBITED," Adding that we should "please confirm you did not spend use the pay-pal facility for £122.05, as when I process the indemnity and there funds are GENUINE they will just debit your account again".
Not quite sure what this means but I have explained the situation and asked them to go ahead with the "direct debit indemnity". If this goes through and we get our money back, I presume Paypal will then come after us and be forces to discuss the matter with us instead of just ignoring us.
We shall see.
No response from PP re my fraud report.
No response yet form Royal Mail re my missing (returns) parcel claim.

First the bad news:
My currently account holders, having said that they could recoup the DD now say they can't.
The Chinese/Australian UGG boots people actually emailed me to say that they could not issue a refund because it was more than 60 days, but I should send them my payapl account details so that they can "send me the money directly"
The post office returned my parcel claim saying that I had not included a Paypal receipt - even though I had. Rang up and RM said this was happening a lot "because of the strikes". They said to re-send - which I have done.
And now the good news:
Paypal have refunded to full amount we paid to our Paypal account :j - this after repeatedly refusing point-blank to even consider our case.
Morals of the story:
1) Never believe anything you are told by banks, firms, post offices etc.
2) Be persistent.0 -

"UGG" is a trade mark outside Australia and certainly in the UK. Even within Australia, although you can sell boots that say "UGG" on them, you can't sell counterfeit Deckers UGG boots - which have a specific logo design.0 -
You could try asking on the Bargain/Shopping boards but don't get your hopes up. Since UGG boots are in demand, they really aren't that likely to turn up on discount or as a loss leader anywhere. Not the real ones. Why would they?0

I think I shall stick to buying UGG boots from reputable shoe shops in future; but this thread was not really about UGG boots (though they were a crucial part of the story) it was about the fact that PayPal is not a good choice for purchases over £100 outside ebay (a credit card is much safer) and PayPal "customer services" don't really provide any services - though, as reported, they did refund my money in the end.
Still waiting to hear from Royal Mail BTW. Perhaps I'll get my postage back too, but I'm not holding my breath.0 -

I know. I was responding to a poster who was asking where to buy cheap UGG boots. Looks like their post has been moved to a more appropriate board. Hence the confusion.0
