never said that you should run your posts before anyone. i merely stated that your comments about whether you like someone taking their PC to someone at work were unwarranted and didn't help the OP original topic/question.
So you thought you would make a post equally unhelpful with respect to the original question? What has you commenting on my post got to do with the thread?

What version of Vista is it?????

    BASIC service pack??? what

There are LOADS of articles about this on MS. I had this problem with my Home Premium but that was installing SP1

    This is what I did

Use the System Recovery options to rename the Pending.xml file and edit the registry:
    1. On the System Recovery Options page, click Command Prompt.
    2. Type cd C:\windows\winsxs, and then press ENTER.
    3. Type ren pending.xml pending.old, and then press ENTER.
    4. Type regedit, and then press ENTER.
    5. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
    6. On the File menu, click Load Hive.
    7. Locate the following folder: C:\windows\system32\config\components
    8. When you are prompted for a name, type Offline_Components.
    9. In Registry Editor, locate and then delete the following registry subkey: HLKM\Offline Components\AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving
      HKLM\Offline Components\PendingXmlIdentifier
    Exit Registry Editor:
    1. At the command prompt, type exit to exit Registry Editor.
    2. Press ENTER.
    3. Click Restart.

Hi All, sorry for delay in replying and sorry I seemed to have started an argument. Just for the record our IT is outsourced to a small IT company and I do favours for them so they are happy to reciprocate.

Any way, we found a solution!

After searching the net and trying a number of things the following worked.

The pending download is held in the C:\windows\winsxs file. Not confident enough to do it myself I got the IT guru to do it for me. On the command prompt screen acess the file (C:\windows\winsxs dir) in there will be pending .xml file(s) then type the command delete pending*.* and bingo! All is good again!

Looks similar to what you have identified scOter thanks.

    Thanks to all for replying.
