Hi, I have a dell inspiron 1501 running xp and recently a norton security scan icon has appered on my desktop.
At first I wasn't too worried as I assumed it was bundeled with all the other junk dell installed.
However today i tried to run the program and on updating it, the text "hit apply to being using the updated product" appeared. This freaked me out as in my experience legit programs don't contain obvious spelling / grammar mistakes.

So is this some kind of Malware?

I'm currently Running AVG (free), spybot S&D and I have adaware installed although it seems to be malfunctioning. Laptop has being running noticably slow (which is why I was trying to run the bloomin thing in the first place).
I'd be greatful for some suggestions.
L.

Did you have Norton installed before this happened?
If so, you shouldn't be using 2 AV programs on the same PC But it does look dodgy to me.
I would ditch AVG and install Kaspersky or Avira.

Cheers guys, no, I'm not running norton. To my knowledge I've never installed it. Not sure if Dell my have installed some a trial version. I have read somewhere that the (real?) norton security scan comes with the google package and shockwave, but this doesn't look like a real version to me and I can't see a way of contacting norton to find out.

Please post your Dell service tag (7 digit number on a little label, probably on the base of the laptop) and I will be able to tell you if it came with Norton installed or not.

Your system ( purchased July '07 if I am correct) originally came with a 30 day trail of McAfee Security Centre 9.0. No mention of Norton. I would imagine McAfee is long deleted if you have been using AVG. So looks like Norton is not really Norton.

Have you ever installed the Google Pack?

How do I uninstall Norton Security Scan?

1 Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2 Click Add or Remove Programs.
3 Click Norton Security Scan, and then click Remove.
