Tobacco/Cig question

Hello

My husband and i are non smokers but a couple of family relatives have asked us to bring back form holiday some Cgerettes and Tobacco (not loads just couple cartons/packs each)

Are we allowed to do this and also what is the cost of these in the Tabac shops in Spain at the mo so i can tell my relatives.

Thank you for any help

You'll be fine you won't be stopped.

Cigs are about 30 euro's a carton, Tobacco 35 a pack euro & you can only buy them in a Tabac shop.

    Cheaper than the airport though!

    Hi,

We bought cigs for family and friends on the continent recently, and can confirm the above: 200 cigs cartons are all about the same price on the continent at about EUR30 per carton for the well-known branded ones.......the obscure branded ones can be as low as EUR15-20!!! Don't be tempted to buy from the airports on either side, as you will kick yourself later on.

You didn't actually answer the question, I'm afraid.

    The actual answer is:
"However any alcohol or tobacco you bring in must be for your own use and transported by you"

    http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageTravel_ShowContent&id=HMCE_PROD_010221&propertyType=document

That would apply if you were returning fom mainland Spain or the Balearics.
If you are coming from the Canary Islands you are allowed 200 duty free cigs, which do not have to be for your own use - but you are not allowed to sell them - even to relatives: presumably you can give them away !

And we were told that being in the EU would make everything simpler

Then they can still buy them, then give them away?

I've been told that both cigs & Tobacco has gone up recently.Depending on which brand you're buying, the usual suspects Lambert & Butler are now roughly 32.50 euros, with Golden Virginia about 43 euros.

    Personnel use includes gifts.

If your stopped just say they are gifts and you are not reselling them.

Latest official prices for CIGS and BACCY, left hand price is in an official tobaccos shop and r/h column from vending machines etc.

As said you cannot sell them, a straight gift is fine but dont mention anything like the babysitter/gardener etc. as this will be considered a "payment in kind" and you stand to lose them.

Spain pumped the prices up considerably at the beginning of June.
A carton of cigarettes is now around the 40euro mark (from 25-28 Euros)

(The airport isnt cheaper btw.....the tabac shops are)
  • Cheers everyone for the replies. Glad we dont smoke really it soooo expensive. Will get what my realtives would like as gifts then... Thank you again.
