Hi, I've currently got an Iphone but am looking for an alternatives when my contract is up in Feb. I like the Iphone and use it a lot-mainly for internet access at home when OH is on the computer and for googlemail as I have a business so i can check my other email addresses when I'm not at home. I'm not too bothered about the music side of things but I would like a better camera. Any of you clever people know of a phone that would be god for me? I'm would have to stay with O2 as they are the only provider I can get a signal with at home.
Thanks for any help:D

I would ask nearer the time. There will be new models out by Feb including the Palm Pre.

I think you woulld be looking at a Palm Pre/Blackberry or a phone based on Google's Android OS if there is one available on O2.

Other than that if you are looking a smartphone phone with a decent camera you would be stuck with Windows Mobile on an HTC device.
  • I'd pick palm pre - you can get it outside O2, unlock it and use in your network

I've gone for the Nokia N97 and haven't had reason to complain about it so far. The major grip I have with the iphone is that the old iphone 3G had 2 megapixel camera and they announced they were going to upgrade it. A lot of other phone companies then came out with 5,8,12 megapixel cameras and all that Apple did was upgrade it to 3 megapixel, why even bother?

Thanks Chris-another one to investigate! Have looked at the palm Pre and it looks spot on, and its going to be on O2. Shame theres no price/tariff info yet but as it's O2 I guess its not going to be a saving on my current Iphone tariff :-/

I am going to give you a short list which is not that short, as alternatives you could consider to the iPhone. Not all will do exactly the same stuff the iPhone does - some will do some things better and others worse.

As mentioned above, the N97 might be worth considering. IMHO it is a good phone which deserves better hardware (to make it speedier) that Nokia designed into it.

The HTC Hero is quite close in functionality to the iPhone and runs the Android system. The Sense user interface makes it clear that the phone's main emphasis is communication rather than multimedia as with the iPhone.

The Samsung i8910 HD is a really cool phone with an excellent screen and good camera, and runs on the same solid and mature Symbian OS as the Nokia N97 (albeit with Samsung's own little touches here and there). It has much faster hardware but has a big disadvantage: it's not really pocketable....

Then there's the bargain-basement choice which is what I am using: the Nokia 5800. It has most of the N97's functions (it runs the same software), and an excellent music player as expected of the XpressMusic series. Drawbacks are it's not the fastest smartphone out there, and it doesn't have great styling... but the cost of any of those I mentioned above would buy two of these.

I haven't tried the Palm Pre yet and honestly it looks tempting, but I can't give a useful opinion on a phone I have yet to try out. I am definitely going to try one - whether I buy is another matter :p

We've been told to expect the Pre to be cheaper than the iPhone 3GS - at least if the monthly cost is the same the 1 of price should be lower. Otherwise people would just buy the iPhone!
