John Lewis - faulty laptop - sales of goods act

Hi All,
I have a complaint open with John Lewis at the moment.
Short version of it is that I bought a laptop, an apple mac, from them in January 2007 - which has had numerous failures including a screen, keyboard, memory and hard drive.
How after a little over 2 and a half years of ownership the logic board (motherboard) has failed and the repair estimate is over £400.
The laptop was originally £1014 and I genuinely don't believe this is an acceptable lifespan for this item - and I also feel like i've been genuinely unlucky as I know people with the exact same machine who've had no problems with them at all...
Following some advice from Trading Standards I wrote to John Lewis asking for them to refund / repair / replace the laptop under my SoAG rights... I finally got a email back on Thursday advising they were looking into it and 'collating information' before caling me on Monday (tomorrow) with a suggested 'router forward'.
Now Trading Standards advised me that John Lewis can either repair / refund (full or partial) or replace. My concern is knowing what to accept - the same model of laptop is not made any more, and I doubt the repair is economically viable as the machine sells second hand now for less than £600.
What would you expect they would offer?
And secondly what do you think would be a fair offer to accept?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

You may be asked to provide an engineers report, to determine if the laptop was inherently faulty /components used were of poor quality, and that there are no signs of user abuse...
As for the remedy if the above is proven, they would follow the route of least expense...................................................................0
