New Boiler Timer Advice Please - See Pics

Hi
I'm waiting for my new kitchen to arrive (Wickes), and they have designed, my request, for a cupboard to go around the boiler as it is quite unsightly. I want to move the timer and fuse so it is at least underneath the boiler so that the cupboard hides it all, besides I also want a nice digital modern timer. I have no idea why it is a good 8" away from the boiler (see pictures).
Can anyone suggest a good timer. I know my boiler is a Glow-worm, but I am not sure about anything else so forgive me if half of this information is irrelevant. The property is a detached bungalow about 15 years old. I have an airing cupboard with tank and immersion heater which I decided not to rip out (a plumber friend of a friend said not to) and then I have the boiler which does the heating/hot water. I do tend to use the immersion heater for some hot water if I've not got the heating or hot water on (not living there currently). Up the loft I have a header tank and in the hall is a thermostat (replacing this with a digital one as the circular dial thing has broke).
Anyway, here are the pictures of the boiler and timer to give you an idea of what I have already! I just want to move the timer/fuse to underneath the boiler. PS - There is nothing up with the boiler, it is just fine....

How about the Horstmann Centaurplus C27 programmer. £31.99 from Screwfix.
Or the Danfoss FP715si programmer. £50.88 from Screwfix.0 -
Hi, thanks for that. The Horstmann looks good and well priced. Will this be OK with my boiler? Don't want to buy it and find it is wrong, I am sure you know much more than boilers than me!!0

It is a bit more work than you think. Behind the programmer is a whole mess of wiring that goes to your airing cupboard. This will need to be taken care of - it is not just a question of moving the two visible wires.0

I am confused! I don't see how this can be. My boiler is on the kitchen wall. My airing cupbard is in the bathroom two rooms away, not even close to the kitchen, nor the boiler. It is a bungalow and I have looked and cannot see how it is possible for them to be connected. I have an independent switch next to the tank in the airing cupboard which I can turn on to heat the water (immersion heater).0 -

If you have independant control over heating and hot water, if you have at least one motorised valve, if you have a room or cylinder thermostat then it will be as I said.
If on the other hand you have none of these things then it is possible that your programmer is being used as a simple switch to start and stop your boiler - but this is very unlikely.
Take a look in the airing cupboard and you shoud see a motorised valve, a pump and a cylinder stat. You should also see all of the wiring terminating in a wiring centre - this is what your programmer is connected to - not the boiler.
P.S. A vastly superior programmer here.0 -
Ok, I will have a look into this. Is it still possible to connect the timer that was mentioned above, although I understand that it is probably going to be more work than I first thought.0
-
Yes, quite a bit more unfortunately.0

Alot depends on how practical you are?.Most new programmers have a re-wiring comparison chart with them, telling you how to convert the old wiring to match the new programmer. It is a bit more work than you think. Behind the programmer is a whole mess of wiring that goes to your airing cupboard. This will need to be taken care of - it is not just a question of moving the two visible wires.0 -
The model you have looks like a Landis & Gyr RWB2, so a good alternative would be a Siemens (Landis & Staefa) RWB29. It will even fit on the same base plate as the old mechanical one.
You may well be able to easily move the unit across to under the boiler, but how easily would depend upon if there are additional wires under the control that would also need moving. An electrician or a good plumber would be able to tell you quite easily. Once the old timer is unclipped (two screws at the bottom) from the base / wall plate it would be easy to tell.0 -
Hi
Did you get this sorted ? If so what did you use.
I have exactly the same boiler and timer. I also wish to replace the timer and an old room stat with digital controls.
My Landis & Gyr timer is fitted inside the boiler on the left hand side behind the brown fold down flap on the front of the boiler. It looks as though it was meant to be installed there.0
