Negotiating with Vodafone

Just thought I'd share my experience negotiating with Vodafone in case it helps anyone else.

I reached the end of my contract and phoned them up to see if I could get an upgrade. The problem is I'm on an old, cheap tariff (£15pm) and being a light user I never exceed the free minutes & text messages, so as a customer I'm not very appealing to them.

Me: "I'd like a Motorola V3i please"
Them: "Based on your phone usage the very cheapest I can offer that to you is £100"
Me: "T-Mobile are currently offering a £15pm with free minutes, texts, and the phone"
Them: "OK, you can have it for free"

Funny how their "best offer" suddenly drops in the face of competition. So now have a brand new free phone winging its way to me.

The moral is make sure you are well armed with the best deals their rivals have to offer before calling. For ammunition the excellent discounted T-Mobile deals can be found here:

  • If this happened to me I would go to T-mobile anyway, and give vodafone the big V sign for trying to rip me off by £100 for the phone in the 1st place. It wouldnt inspire me with confidence in Vodafone. Am I the only one to think like this?
