I work for Carphone, so i can help, yes the store was right if u bring it to a store, we can send it away for repair, but from what u have been saying, it sounds like your LCD is cracked, the black blob would be the LCD leaking out, if that is true.. your warranty doesnt cover it as its classed as customer damager, and the repair is chargable depending on the phone.
i hope this has helped

I think Rev is right here. It sounds like classic screen damage I'm afraid.
The stock answer you will get is that it is customer damage, and therefore not covered. However I have successfully argued a case with Samsung U600 where the screen stopped working. Samsung were insisting that it was not covered under warranty as in their opinion the component responsible doesn't fail through normal use. The conversation ended with my asking for it to be returned to me to seek a 2nd opinion. When it came back they had suddenly decided that it was under warranty and had repaired it. To this date I will never know why the change of mind when they had put so much effort into arguing the case with me.
One counter arguement you could try is incorrect assembly putting undue pressure on the screen, if they do claim it's chargeable. I have actually successfully argued with an insurance co that a poor repair lead to a 2nd failure, which they were claiming was further damage. It was that stupid glass screen on the back of a Motorola V3 - yes they made it in GLASS!
I managed to crack it - not sure how but I did. It was repaired under insurance (poor customer service issues lead them to waive the excess). Days after being repaired it broke again. On closer inspection I found that the new glass screen had not been bedded down properly as the old one would have been. I prepared a report for them and sent it off. Whilst they tried to argue the toss I stuck to my guns and they repaired it again free of charge. Guess what, the glass screen broke again!
In the end Dialaphone took the handset back and replaced it, as they found out it was destined for a different market country and should not have been sold in the UK.Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -

I fail tgo see the problem with that... glass is more resistant to scratches compared to the plastic screens most other phone uses.... in this case it was simply down to fitment error rather than a defect in the phone that caused the issue...
boot note... all iPhones use glass screens!0
