What books to read to my daughter?

i would like to get my daughter some books to read to her at night . she is 21 months old and is picking up on words very fast now. she has read so far: Gruffalo (the 2 out), Room on the Broom and Tickle Monster. are there any other books that mums or dads recommend are any good that i could get from amazon or any other cheap online place?
i would like to teach her the alphabet and how to count too that is a bit of fun. any suggestions on this front too would be great.
thanks in advance.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Nothing better than the library. My son (20 months) and I spent 45 minutes in there yesterday choosing his new books and I had to endure a tantrum when we left.

As for teaching alphabet and counting...big bright posters to look at, jigsaws, snap cards, singing them. She'll only be able to recite them initially...matching the symbol to the letter/number is a high order skill which you can practice by looking for things in pictures, finding "the same" and pairs of items and lots of other games like that.

My daughter learned to read with

    Green Eggs and Ham

all the Dr Seuss books are fun to read because they rhyme.

I agree about the library if you have one locally. We used to spend hours in there choosing books, they also used to have fun reading and playing sessions for young children once or twice a week.

Definitely worth checking out in your area.

  • Try:

Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell (read to destruction in our house!)
    ABC Zoo by Rod Campbell
    The Spot books
the Blue Kangaroo books by Emma Chichester Clark
Peepo by Janet and Allen Ahlberg
Duck in the Truck (& others) by Jez Alborough

All adored by my two for ages now (they're aged 2 and 3).

Waterstones has 3 for 2 on all children's books at the moment.

In my opinion you can't have too many books in the house.

    Have fun!

Three of my favourites from when my children were smaller were:

Peepo - a wonderful rhyming book with old-fashioned pictures
Guess How Much I Love You - almost cry at the end of this still!
Why Do Stars Come out at Night - typical of all those questions children

I still have all of these on the bookcase and can't bear to part with them. Happy reading with your daughter - the time soon goes and I miss those bedtime snuggles x

The Book people do great lucky dips at Christmas, very cheap.

We have loads of books in the house but use the library too. We read the kids a story every night so we soon get bored reading the same books although the kids don't seem to mind. You can get 10 books from the library at a time so its worth a visit.
Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!
  • My Daughter loved "Percy the Park Keeper" books, we used to buy her the book and tape version so she could "read" along herself in the car and she loved us reading out loud before going to sleep, although we used to listen to her, on the monitor, "Read" them to her teddy after we had gone downstairs complete with funny voices!

AHhhhhh the memories, she is now into Goth Metal and tucks us up at night!!!!!
Growing old is manditory, Growing up is optional! :j

hi, if you are looking at getting books cheap try your local charity shops if you aren't bothered if they are brand new. iv'e picked up about 20 books for my 13 month old daughter from charity shops and they have cost me between 25p and 75p each and have all been in nearly new condition. she now has a collection of around 40 books that she will sit by herself and look through them for a good 20 mins which gives me a bit of time to sit down and rest.
