I run a driving school in Cardiff, and there is "cut-throat" competition out there. Driving instructors are flooding into the business expecting to pick up £30k per year in wages, but they may be lucky to see one tenth of that after paying out expenses on fuel, car maintenance and income tax! Lots of schools are advertising lessons for £10/hour (or less) which is suicidal! The "norm" in this area is around £17/£18 per hour (still dirt cheap!) Piano lessons and tennis lessons (where there are no high maintenance costs involved -who ever heard of an expensive 40,000 mile service on a tennis raquet) can be up to £30/hr, and pupils seem happy to accept that, but they try and claw the price of driving lessons down to ridiculous levels, resulting in instructors incomes falling to near the minimum wage! By all means look for value for money, but a driving lesson is not like buying a fridge or a telly! There are good driving instructors out there and some not so good ones, so don't just go for price. You may find that, in value for money terms, a normal priced lesson (say £18 per hour) could work out cheaper than a cheaper lesson in the long run, as the dearer instructor may be more efficient and get you to test standard with a lot fewer lessons.0

Fair point, Gazzouth, and that was why I asked for best value, not cheapest.
I've been warned off the most expensive as well as the cheapest, so I was looking for personal recommendations, thanks.0 -
I'm with cats eyes .. my instructor is brilliant and its only £16 an hour
Have had 8 lessons with cats eyes(£165 for 10 lessons) so far no probs. Then receive message telling me I didn't turn up for a lesson. The driver had put the wrong time in my appointment card.
Left him a message on answer phone, text message and rang driving school..no reply. Waited 3 days then rang driving school again.
My instructor is in hospital and it will be a month before I can have another lesson. I am still owed 2 lessons!. Can't claim back the lessons with another driving instructor; as I paid my instructor cash (asked for receipt, but didn't give me one, told me my appointment card was receipt, though no mention of money paid on it.)
Things seem pretty vague with the driving school; Im left out of pocket, and very dissapointed. (don't hand over cash unless there is a receipt). May now have to change, to a more reliable school unless this gets sorted out.
