Hi
What is really needed is the processor speeds. The early Athlons started at 850MHz and eventually finished at 1.7Ghz (i think).
Likewise, is yours a P2, P3 or a P4 Pentium?
However, given the OS installed and the memory, I tend to agree with the other contributers here. It is highly likely that the Athlon machine will be an improvement.
Go for it! Get it posted by one of the numerous internet parcel post options for £10-£15 and you're sorted.0 -
The first Athlon was 500mhz (I know I had one) but you'd never have 4gb of ram on such a system unless you were really really realy flash.
The the name has run for ages and is still being used to some of amd's processors so really need model type + speed etc.
But with 4gb ram its liky to be a later one.0 -
It won't be 4GB of RAM, not on Windows XP 32..... Even if it had that much fitted to the mobo, it wouldn't be recognised by XP.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Loads of computers have 4x 1Gb sticks running XP 32bit, I used to have one, it's true not 100% of it can be used but most of it can (& XP does know you have 4Gb).0

Won't it get damaged couriered? They don't care courier's, just chuck it around0 -
If it's a desktop unit it should be fine. If you can find a box that fits it reasonably well and then stuff it out with some newspaper or somthing to fill the gaps. I'd be a lot more worried sending somthing like an lcd panel in a poorly fitting box.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

Not if it's properly packed and protected, i.e. not just one flimsy layer of cardboard. How do you think base units get to the shops in the first place?-by courier.
I always write 'fragile with care' etc everything, even if it isn't.
The only PC-related items I've ever had damaged were two printers I sent by parcel post-both damaged beyond repair. Since then I've always used virtual couriers for bulky items and never had a problem. The couriers they use are the big firms, DHL, Parceline, TNT etc, so it's not just some cowboy with a white van.
Much cheaper than parcel post and you get a signature on delivery.
Basic system with Paysend is that you pay upfront by Paypal, this gives you a booking code, you then use that to book the actual pickup+ delivery. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I brought a second hand tower for my parents, when I wasn't in to take delivery the driver apparently (neighbours told me) threw the thing back into his van and drove off.
When it turned up I confronted the driver, but it was a different chap. PC worked fine though luckily.
Due to the low standard of education some of these guys have, when the parcel says "Fragile", they read "Football".“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Anyway, if you collect it yourself, you get to spend some time with your friend, and save them the bother of packing it up and making sure it is 'courier proof'I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0
