How good a spec is this?

A friend has said I can have his old desktop computer which has an AMD Athalon processor, 2-4gb RAM (couldn't remember which) and running Windows XP.

I have to drive 3hrs there and 3hrs back to pick it up, so just didn't want to waste my time. He's giving it me for free, but I still have to pay about £40 in petrol

I currently only have a Pentium 4 running Windows Me with 128mb or RAM !! :o So anything is an improvement

Are these AMD processor's any good? Does the spec sound ok?
Just wanted to make sure it was worth my while

    Does it matter?

If you were in the market to buy a new pc, then fair enough compare processors but since you're getting this one for £40 then surely you should be comparing the new processor against your old one.

As King said...this is much better than your existing set up so isn't it irrelevant to compare it to a pc you wont be getting anyway? The increased memory alone will make a big difference to you.

    AMD processors are fine btw.

Not much to go on to be honest but the scant details you have given suggest it is a HUGE improvement over your existing PC.

considering Pentium is a 10+ year old name...yes, it's better than a pentium

should be well worth the £40 petrol cost for the massive improvement in performance

Thanks, I know your right, just wanted to make sure it was worth the run.:D

Hadn't really heard of the AMD processor's before
  • Do a clean install on it and should be fine, any hardware glitches that are apparent to negate the time /costs in travel?

Sounds like a vast improvement, even with 'only' 2GB of RAM. Even a low-spec Athlon with XP is a big improvment on ME, which is no longer supported and cannot be secured online. This would be worth at least £60, for free it's a no-brainer.
Why spend £40 on fuel-just book a virtual courier service to collect from him and that will cost you about £10.

On the few details you've provided, it seems to be a good deal for £40 cost. A computer with 128mb ram running ME must be pretty slow. The one you can get for £40 with 2gb+ RAM should be much faster just because of the RAM alone, so you will notice the speed increase, even if the processor turns out to be a bit slower than the one in your PC at the moment.

It's a good gamble, buy it and see! If you don't like it sell it, used PCs are very cheap but you should get your £40 back.
