Comet fridge freezer broken

Hiya im after some help and advice please - in nov 2007 we bought a Beko fridge freezer form comet paid £300 cash for it and it was great - yesterday i noticed some items were not frozen in my freezer so i moved all the meat and as much as i could to my chest freezer (thank god i have this!!!) and left some ice pos in the freezer and they have remained unfrozen - thr fridge part of it is cool but this morning the milk was warm so it seems liek its broken -

on our paperwork comet state we have a 12 month manufacturers warrenty which is with beko and would have expired yet this is not that old and shouldnt have broken - my OH says teh following in the sales of good act means comet have to repair or replace the item -

48B Repair or replacement of the goods
(1) If section 48A above applies, the buyer may require the seller
(a) to repair the goods, or
(b) to replace the goods.
(2) If the buyer requires the seller to repair or replace the goods, the seller must
(a) repair or, as the case may be, replace the goods within a reasonable time but without causing significant inconvenience to the buyer;

and this is due to the fact it states a reasnobale amount of time - can anyone offer any advice on this please as i really think this item should not have broken this soon.

Many thanks

Your right about things supposedly lasting a reasonable amount of time, but
Beko is a really cheap brand and generally not that well built.

I doubt Comet will help you at all.

I have had dealings with comet with an expensive TV set that was 13 months old and failed, They just keep saying that its not their responsibility and you need to contact the manufacturers.

The seem to think the Sale of goods act doesnt apply to THEM, and will just keep turning you away untill you get bored or give up in despair.

    Good luck.

The best that you can hope for is Comet may make a contribution to the cost of repairs. However, they may (justifiably) ask for an engineer's report for which you may have to pay. You certainly do not have a right to a refund or replacement as the freezer functioned perfectly until the last few days.

Comet will try to fob you off, either by claiming that the expiry of guarantee absolves them of responsibility or that you should approach the manufacturer. Neither is true.

thanks do you think im better off speaking to comet or putting it in writing? do you think that trading standards could help at all because a cheaper brand shoul still not break after that amount of time tho? i could claim on my home insurace i suppose but woudl rather not if there is anyway of getting around it!!! im so annoyed it has broken this early tho id have expected it to last longer!! never again!!!

Speak to Comet first, then write to them if you get no joy. Make sure you include all information about what has happened, what you want to happen and what you will do if you don't get any satisfaction from them.

btw, as someone who works in Technical Support I can't resist asking whether you have done any basic troubleshooting? Clearly the freezer has stopped freezing but is there any indication that there is power to the freezer, e.g. has the fuse in the plug failed? Are any alarm lights on?

I would put any complaint in writing just to cause Comet a little hassle, but I wouldnt expect a decent outcome.

I for one will never buy from them again and badmouth them EVERY opportunity I get.

There is a good site HERE for kitchen appliances with lots of HONEST information on warranties and spares.

It may be reasonably cheap to fix if your lucky.

Halloway is right too, have you checked the basics?

Get someone around to repair it.

Look in the yellow pages for local companies.

    Home insurance won't cover breakdown.

Can you let us know the exact model or name of the fridge then someone may be able to help fault finding.

    The usual problems are

    1. Check the heat exchanger is clear and not blocked with rubbish thats fallen down the back of the appliance. (usually the heat exchanger is like a grid or mesh on the back of the unit. but sometimes it is underneath and you will have vents by the floor.)

    2. Is the top shelf Too frozen with ice and snow,to the extent that the whole thing needs defrosting so air can circulate inside.

    3. Does the door close properly? are the magnetic seals in a good condition?

    4. can you hear the compressor run sometimes (it shouldnt run ALL the time only for a while then stop again for a while)

Theres a good fault finding page HERE.

    Hiya its a BEKO CDA670FS

    http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/564036/BEKO-CDA670FS

if that helps - its been making a funny noise and sometimes the fan hits ice there is not loads of ice in there as its a frost free one so there is never lots of ice - it also has auto defrost on it too so not sure what else i can check - the drain at the back is not blocked (in the fridge bit) and the grid things at the back are clear too any advice is greatly appreciated as i could really do without this breaking now (when is a good time eh???) thanks a million !!!
