I dont follow, Wheres the grey area?
You have a current MOT and it runs out in three weeks time. You have the MOT test early and if fails on, say a wheel bearing (OP scenario).

Now, is the car legal for the next 3 weeks or not? Does the fail wipe out the current MOT?

That is the grey area that we have (supposedly) been discussing on this thread!

I am understood to believe that the MOT is still current for the next 3 weeks which gives the Op plenty of time to have the wheel bearing replaced before the MOT runs out.

If the vehicle had failed for something *dangerous* - as the MOT/VOSA like to phrase it - then MOT station can hold the vehicle back?? I'm not sure on that one....

Another thing to had is okay, you take the car 3 weeks early, it fails on the wheel bearing, you get that repaired and take it back for re-test,mean time a brake light as blown, they only retest it for the wheel bearing, before anyone says they should fully retest it,yes fine but the garages around where we live only retest the things that the vehicle as failed on, thus putting 12 months MOT on a car that is not road legal Whats the answer to this one

A full retest will apply if it is 10 working days that have passed...

Our guys would spot the brake light bulb - anything else more drastic happening since the full MOT would be highly unlikely if the MOT inspector is worth his salt!

I asked my garage as I was in today getting a service.

If you MOT your car and it fails, that fail does not invalidate the current MOT. You could therefore retest the car despite it having 10 months MOT left. Even if it fails the existing 10 months still stand.

Even if there was some investigation into the garages integrity and it transpired that the governing motor body people pointed out a list of faults with a car that had just passed its MOT, the MOT would not be revoked. The guy at the garage explained MOTs stand for their entirety regardless of these factors, that once its issued it cannot under any circumstance end prematurely.

The only thing to note is that if it did fail on a numerous things deemed dangerous, but you continued to drive it then the police have powers to fine you. That fail would be held on the database and while it wouldnt invalidate the however many months you have remaining it will flag up the fact that you continued to drive the car regardless of the dangerous faults being found.

Not if I drive the car home and correct the faults immediately. Then the fail sheet will have absolutely no relevance at all.

Yea.... in which case the police would have no reason to fine you nor get to the stage of checking for the failure details....

!!!!!!, and no disrespect to you Kriss, this was the point I was banging on about from the start. Even if you think you have and may therefore have a current MOT, by having it tested and failing on something serious, you can be held at fault, 11 month old piece of paper or not:T
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
