Vodafone - taking mobiles abroad but don't want roaming - what to do?

We are soon to be going to Dubai and will be taking our vodafone mobiles with us.

We don't want to use Vodafone roaming abroad, hence my earlier question about local sim cards on PAYG. However we will want to use wifi on these things (nokia 5800s).

Do we do nothing, or do we have to tell Vodafone that we DONT want roaming? I know with Orange we have to tell them if we DO want roaming.

if your phone is unlocked, you could put the local SIM in it

or use another phone for the local SIM, and switch your 5800 to offline mode -either on the power button drop-down menu or start the phone with no SIM in it, and wi-fi should still work; my E51 does

if you have voicemail from Vodafone, you might as well disable it before you go - otherwise if you have the phone on abroad (maybe for receiving text messages) and don't answer, then voicemail can count as incoming plus outgoing calls
