As someone else has said, it is not unusual for someone to go in higher up the scale, if they have the relevant skills and experience.

For example I once worked for an employer in the private sector, but for historical reasons, the salary was linked to local govt payscales. I was offered the position at the top of the grade, because I had specific skills and experience which the other applicants didn't have.
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.

    Hi,

I know what she's getting paid because she told me! I wouldn't discuss my salary as i don't think its proffesional, but she mentioned it to me a few months back and it has been playing on my mind. I'm a very private person and wouldn't discuss my salary, but some people don't seem to share that attitude!!

Hi Janine - my question was to the OP who has since stated she works in the private sector.

The only person your going to spite is the other women. She as you say is doing exactly the same job as you so why should she get paid less regardless of how much service she has had.

I had a similar thing in my last company. A lady was recruited after covering for maternity leave and was paid the same salary as the rest of us doing the same job - I'd been with the company for 10 years at that point and like you had worked my way up in salary.

When my employers were questioned about it their response was that they felt they had to pay the market rate for the particular role and anything less would prove difficult to recruit and retain staff. She had the same experience as the rest of us, so why shouldn't she get paid the same?

  • to be honest the question is quite ridiculous like you this woman has a living to earn if you were in her shoes would you want to start at the bottom all over again? It sounds like jealousy it doesnt affect your job your still taking your wage infact the only thing that would help is "if she was paid less then you" seems like you need to get your ego in check!

Working your way up the salary scale at one company is an anitiquated concept. In my opinion, in general, if somebody has the same experience as you in terms of time worked, and have worked at more companies than you (for a reasonable length of time ie 18 months +) then they should expect to earn more, as they have better experience than you - they will notice flaws in your working practices and bring in an outside perspective that will benefit your employers.

I earn more than most people my age with the same amount of experience which I put largely down to getting a variety of experience - I've worked in 4 distinct roles for 3 different employers in 4 years, which makes me more valuable to an employer than somebody who has sat in the same role/company for the same length of time. When you do have a range of experience such as this, you notice the blinkered views of people who stay at one company, who fail to notice inefficient processes as it's all they've ever known.
