Same salary as person covering my maternity leave

Hi
I work in a school, and i'm a couple of years older than this other lady (not that this should make a difference!) I have more experience in this field of work than this lady, just working for a different company!
I totally understand that people would feel it unfair that i would get the same salary as she has been working here longer. But equally i don't think it should just go on how long you have worked somewhere, but your performance, reliabilty and previous experience etc.
I was going to have a chat with my boss, he can only say no and its worth a shot! Its just a little disheartning knowing she is getting so much more than me. And i can say in all honestly that if a new member of staff started next week with similar experience i would have no problem with them being on the same wage as me.:heart2: Newborn Thread Member :heart2:

She's doing exactly the same job as you, so gets the same pay as you. Seems fair to me."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Sorry my post wasn't aimed at you.
I think you're quite right to find out why someone's getting 5k a year more than you for the same job, I'd be livid!:T0 -
How do you know what she is being paid anyway?
And to be honest, other people's salaries aren't really anyone else's businessMetranil dreams of becoming a neon,You don't even take him seriously,How am I going to get to heaven?,When I'm just balanced so precariously..0 -

Hi,
I know what she's getting paid because she told me! I wouldn't discuss my salary as i don't think its proffesional, but she mentioned it to me a few months back and it has been playing on my mind. I'm a very private person and wouldn't discuss my salary, but some people don't seem to share that attitude!!:heart2: Newborn Thread Member :heart2:

I'd disagree in the public sector, it's everyone's business what Teachers. Doctors etc are being paid, and salary scales should be transparent. :j0 -
"But salaries are worked out on relevent experience. Do you honestly expect someone to do your job on the salary you started on 5 years ago? With not even cost of living increases?

Are you public or private sector?"
Private sector. Our salaries are increased annually in accordance with cost of living so no I do not expect her salary to fall way behind but I don't feel my work has been recognised if someone walked in and get same salary straight away. the salary structure is spine point and surely she should go on the bottom of the scale for that job and work her way up in the same way as I did.
I don't feel very valued by the employer over this.No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -

The scales are, but an individuals position on that scale isn't (although if you knew how long they'd been in post you'd have a rough idea)0 -

Generally speaking, with a pay spine system people enter at the lowest point unless:
1. They have relevant experience or
2. They have been unable to recruit at that salary (which implies the spine needs to be overhauled to reflect the jobs market)
3. It's a low paid job and the bottom has been overtaken by the minimum wage0 -
Hi all, grateful for advice please. I am on my 2nd maternity leave and the lady my employer brought in to cover my 1st maternity leave has been made permanent now and earns the same as me.
Just saw that it was your 2nd bout of maternity leave
Depending on how long you've had of is it possible that she received annual spine increases while she was covering your maternity leave and you didn't get any whilst you were away & thus she's caught up with you?
eg I worked with a lady who had ~4 year carear break with her kid & during that time got no spine point increases so if they'd filled that post with a new starter they'd have caught her up by 4 points0
