Same salary as person covering my maternity leave

Options
Hi all, grateful for advice please. I am on my 2nd maternity leave and the lady my employer brought in to cover my 1st maternity leave has been made permanent now and earns the same as me. That is despite the fact I worked for the employer for a few years and got all the payrises I deserved whereas this lady was merely brought in to cover my maternity leave and has been made permanent and is now on same salary as me. This is not fair. My view is that she should be on the bottom of the salary scale and work her way up just like I did. Is there anything I can do about this?

Grateful for views/advices.

Thanks.

Boz

No, there is nothing you can do about this. It is very common for employers to pay people on merit, and the employer has done nothing wrong - unless the decision to pay this lady the same as you can been viewed as unlawful discrimination in some way, but you haven't said anything to indicate this.

Edit - looking at your previous thread, you also objected to the company's use of former appraisals when considering staff for promotion. It does seem that you might be generally unhappy at your work and perhaps this is making you feel sidelined?

Dependant on the work place, She may have the experience and been able to evidence this during the interview. If she has she would be entitled to the same pay. I work for a goverment agency and my job is career graded . I have the experience byt couldnt evidence it in my interview as i was so nervous. Out of 15 of us that got the job 1 person got a higher grade.

All I can say is forget about it. If you are in a union get them to look into it . Enjoy your time with your bean and worry about ti when you return. Who knows 6 months down the line you may be ready for new pastures , she may have moved on .. Chill winston . Concentrate on more important things.. And yea before you ask I had a same simular situation . When I went on Mat leave I was told I was redeployed on my return. So I had a small baby due to stress, and had to look for a job and have interviews when I should have been enjoying my DS.XXXXX

I think you should just maybe concentrate on your own career and what you earn, not others. Why get yourself all stressed out about what someone else earns and whether or not you think its fair? Its not worth it, concentrate on yourself.

It sounds fair enough to me - she presumably did your job to the same standard you did it so is being paid the same. There is nothing to stop a new employee from pushing to be paid more than the bottom of a payscale and she might have done this using the above argument.

if she has the same experience as you then it seems fair to pay her the same money. Whilst you have worked your way up in that company she may have done it elsewhere. It would be unfair if two people were doing the same job with the same skills and not being paid the same money in my opinion.

Enjoy your maternity leave and dont worry about work while you are off.

    Hi

I have a similar problem where i work. I was employed 2 years ago along with another lady who does the same job as me, we both get paid the same salary, no problems. But there is another lady who also has the same job title as me and i know that she is on 3 scales above me (council job!) This lady has been there for 5 years, but as far as i can see we all have exactly the same workload and do identical jobs, seems alittle unfair to me. I know she is on around 5 thousand pounds a year more than me, a rather large amount!

Wasn't sure what i could do about though?

    Thanks

If you went to do the job at another employer and had the same experience as someone who worked there already you wouldnt expect to be paid say £100 a month less.
Concentrate on you and your baby, what anyone else earns is really noting to do with you. I could understand you complaining if she was paid £100 more than you but just get on with your own life and good luck with the baby
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

you don't think its fair but I do because she worked there for 5 years and earned that. you will reach that level in 5 years time yourself. I would consider it unfair if you get the same money as this lady!

  • :confused:but who's to say she hasn't worked to the same level as you at another company?

But salaries are worked out on relevent experience. Do you honestly expect someone to do your job on the salary you started on 5 years ago? With not even cost of living increases?
