Options
Guys im looking for a wireless router that is cheap and simple. I would get it from the likes of PC WORLD, Dixons, Currys etc as they will all be in Edinburgh...

Any suggestions??

:) Thanks

Yep, the Netgear DG834G is certainly one of the best. I have one and can recommend it.

£59.99 including free USB wireless adapter - http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/257700

Provided that you're on ADSL (not Telewest nor NTL), then the suggested gear would be fine. Had the DG834GT and it was working just fine for my previous setup (ADSL). However, if you're on NTL/Telewest, get yourself a Linksys WRT54GS (£49.99) from PCWorld or Currys... using it right now and I've zero problem up till now.

I am currently using a belkin f5d7231-4 and can recommend it if you want a dsl router. I do this purely from the service I have recieved from their support. I developed a fault which on reflection was down to me messing about with some settings and had to contact belkin CS for help. Their support center turned out to be based in India(at least as far as I can tell from the accent) so I was not too optimistic but they did all they could to get me back on track and I got the impression that even if the problem was on the computer's side, they would have tried to fix it in order to get it talking to the router. The good thing is that support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and the number is an 0800 one. Other manufacturers may have a similar service but belkin are the only one I have experience of.

My Netgear DG834G is gathering dust in the attic because it constantly dropped my internet connection and required me to go and pull the power cable out of the back to reset it. Since I got my Belkin F5D7633, my access has been rock steady stable and I never have to reset my router. Now, my Netgear is the DG834G v1, I have no experience of the v2, which may be miles better, I don't know. I do know I wouldn't buy another Netgear (and I wish I hadn't recommended one to my parents last year) but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Belkin.

    Cheers,
    Stephen

I'm using a 3com ADSL router & wireless card and can't fault either of them. Very reliable upto now. The range is pretty impressive too

Sadly, I was already at the latest release of firmware. I even tried a few beta versions along the way. Now, I may have had a duff one, but I'm still happy with my Belkin :)

I have tried a few and found the Netgear as good as any. Unfortunately they often run 'hot' and seem to have a relatively short lifespan if, like me, you run them 24/7.

The DG834G v1 was supposed to be better at cooling than the v2 (which is smaller).

My V1 is running 24/7 no problems for the best part of 2 years now.
