Late Payment Charge....Just one day late!

I really need your advice about my Halifax One Credit Card.
I received my statement on Saturday and was very surprised to see that I had been charged a £25 late payment fee. I couldn't see how this was right as both my credit card payments are met each month by a standing order everymonth for a set amount. On looking a little closer, I noticed that the payment due date was the 3rd of April (Monday) but because of the weekend, the standing order didn't hit until the 4th, hence they charged me a late payment fee.
Now is it me or does this seem just a little unfair? I have never missed a payment as I have always had dd's or an SO set up. It just seems to me that because I do make my payments on time and pay more than the minimum payment, that Halifax wanted to make a fast buck and charge me!!!!
I was so incensed at the time (have calmed down a bit now!!!) but I just wanted to see what you guys thought. If the payment had been 3 or 4 days late, then I could understand, but when its clear to see that the lateness occurred due to a technicality as oppossed to a reluctance to pay, well it just made me mad!!!!!!
All advice welcome - should I go back to Halifax and demand a full refund? FYI - when I called them at the weekend, they offered me 50% as an act of goodwill......Grrrrrrr!!!!

Call again and express your deeply "hurt" feelings, most cc ops will refund a first "offence" fully.
If not ask to speak to a supervisor, and to them, express your concern about their system ( computer based systems are good at hanging lambs as well as lions with the same relish). Wont do it again honest guv.
If no luck tell them that you will close your account and move elswhere. If that doesen't work then they are not worth staying with anyway.
good luck,ac's lovechild0 -
Fully agree with the above. But - for info - is the SO from a Halifax account? As they now run their systems daily - so the weekend now makes no difference. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

Why don't you change to a direct debit of the min amount then pay any additional payments in a stand order? Prevents any thing like this happening again. But as said a good "unhappy" letter will do the trick for a first offender!!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 092

Thanks guys for your response, was thinking about this all the way home on the tube!!

The SO is set up in an HSBC account, hence the delay. As for setting up a dd for the minimum amount and then an SO for the remainder, I hadn't thought about this before but I'm not too sure. I can just see something happening and it all going wrong - is this something you do KPcuddles? Does it work for you?
What I have done is to move the payment due date on my cc account back by a few days so hopefully this shouldn;t happen again.
My real annoyance is how quickly they acted to give me the charge - Just one bl**dy day!! - and don't even get me started on the customer services guy who I dealt with on the phone on saturday!!!! I hope he didn't get any easter eggs!!!!!0 -

This happened to me at the Millenium, I 'phoned the Halifax, kept my cool while then explained the Bank Holiday reason to me, then asked 'what they were going to do about it?'. They returned the bank charge, no problems.
Keep your cool, but be firm with them that it was entirely not your fault or mistake, just the system's and you would like them to put it right.
Best of luck

Well with my HSBC I have min payment by DD and then any additional payment are done via online banking anytime after my pay day! I feel so much better knowing A payment will always be made at the right time (as they organise the DD!!) and that any overpayments I want to make I do myself when I want too!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 092

Fine, but going back to your earlier post - the latter is not a SO as most people would recognise it. In effect you're making a 'bill payment' under your personal timing and supervision.
Both a DD and an unsupervised SO suffer the same problem in respect of the OP. If you don't have the initiation date set to cover every permutation of weekend / Bank Holiday - you finish with a late payment? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
A DD will never be late as it is always taken in time by the bank - you do not have to worry when.Mikeyorks wrote:Fine, but going back to your earlier post - the latter is not a SO as most people would recognise it. Apologies - in respect of this thread, that's absolutely correct. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
yeah.. was I was trying emphasie, that the DD would always ensure you made your payment ontime, if you wanted to make more then min (which was me assuming that's why the SO was set up) then you can still arrange this via other methods!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 092
