You could use your contract that you have now just make sure you have the web bolt on.0

Yes, you just lose out on the odd features such as visual voicemail.0

sorry but there is no "cheapest place for an iphone". I believe mobiles .co. uk offer £60 cashback through Quidco but this may be for monthly contract iphones only, not PAYG.
I know anything with the Apple brand is a highly desirable item to many so market forces allow the retailers to all charge the RRP without the need to discount without the fear of losing sales because of the high demand for these products.
You would think there may be a case for monopoly of the market or whatever it's called - this also applies for the Ipod Touch - no siginificant discount anywhere.0 -

As said by MRC all you have to do is buy a PAYG handset and put the sim card in.
But the sim card has to be a 3G sim card or it will not work. But all you have to do is ring O2 get them to check what sim card it is, and if is an old one they will send you a new 3G free to replace it.
Also if you do buy a PAYG iphone, try and get it from apple online to get a few quid back via quidco (3%). Also apple dont make you buy a PAYG sim card unlike O2 shops which they charge you a tenner for.
And remember when your 18mth are up ring for a retension deal without a phone and you should get an even better deal on your monthly fee's.

I recently bought an 3GS, online thru Apple (very quick delivery by TNT).
My existing contract doesn't expire for another 4 weeks, so I just put my sim into the Iphone and it worked 1st time. You do have to change a few settings to get MMS to work OK, but you can find these easily on t'internet.
As someone said, you do need a 3G sim to make use of the web features. You can check this yourself by looking at the series of number/letters printed on your sim. If the last 4 digits contain "3G", then you're OK.
If not, you can call into the O2 shop and get a new sim and call o2 customers services (202) to transfer your number over to the new sim. Takes about an hour.
Good luck.
PS I plan to "negotiate" for a decent simplicity contract when my contract expires.0
