Hey!
Sorry for this, but I'd really appreciate some help on buying a laptop!
I'll connect to broadband, download, computer-gaming (so i'd need a fairly good graphics card), but with so many companies offering such different laptops at such varied prices, i dont know where to start!
Obviously being on MSE I'd like the cheapest price!!
could anyone point me in the right direction? Any brands or companies that are a sure-fire bet?
Thanks very much!

For laptops I do not think you can beat ebay.
I have bought 2 in the last year both V good Pentium 3 machines.
Not sure about computer games - but good for everything else you mention at about £200- £220. You will need to bid on a few - but can be won at that price
If you must buy new ebuyer.com is the best imho0 -
I buy lots of spares from eBuyer but for laptops themselves I now use Comet. Their prices are just as good and the service is a bit more reliable.
If I buy an Acer machine (they seem good at the moment) I then buy the extended warranty from eBuyer though.
If going secondhand in eBay I'd recommend the IBM Thinkpad T23. Very cheap and they last for ever! Can I help?0 -

If you're a serious (or even half-serious!) gamer, why are you buying a laptop?
Laptops although getting more powerful graphics cards in them now are still not really that suited to gaming. If you do find a laptop with enough CPU/RAM/Vid Card power to run new games it comes at a premium price compared to a desktop.0 -
Hmm, I'd say that I am a fairly serious gamer, but i find that my desktop is becoming increasingly rowdy, and also other family members reckon that their work is more important than my gaming!! how daft!
And so because I dont have so much space, and I would like a bit of mobility and to take my laptop around with me, a laptop would be the best bet for me..
So in terms of spec, what should I be looking for? I mean in terms of the graphics card and ram etc. mind you i'm not a HARDCORE gamer, so i wouldn't need the most state of the art gaming parts, but I do buy the latest games and would be hoping to play online too..
Any suggestions?
Much appreciatedx

There was a similar question here There is also a forum dedicated to Overclocking your laptop and getting the best games performance in amongst that lot.
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -

You can never have a high enough spec for the latest games.
Spec-wise, you should look at 1.8GHz Intel Duo/2GHz AMD Turon
CPU, 1Gb RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon Graphics Card.
If you play the latest games and want to run them at a reasonable speed, you will need a mid-top range laptop. Budget machines won't do the job.
You don't say what budget you have, but I'd say you'd need at least £800 to play with (no pun intended!) for a half decent games laptop.0
