Read the leaflets, you can save double your money!

I contacted anglian water after reading a leaflet they sent with my latest bill and as I have recently become unemployed, I decided to check out if and how to reduce my bill. I read under the ' extra help for vulnerable customers' section if annual consumption is under 75 cubic meters I could change to a tariff called SoLow. As i've had my meter for 2 years, when i moved into the property I checked my usage. I have used 87 cubic meters in 2 years so fall well into this category. I contacted Anglian water to see if they would refund the over payment of at least £165 as my meter shows my consumption. Their answer was that it is my responsibilty to make sure I am on the correct tarrif, not something they would recommend!!!!that's customer service for you. I am now paying £10 per month instead of £23 which is great but I wish i'd taken it upon myself when i had the meter fitted to check out all the tariff's available, even though I wouldn't consider myself needing 'extra help for vulnerable people'. Just shows, read the small print whatever your situation

I went onto this tariff as soon as I moved into the property, yet I have had a red reminder today (have not previously received a bill!) for £101, am presuming this is a quarterly bill for three months usage as I know i paid one about 6 weeks after I moved in. This means this bill works out at £33 a month! Not 'so-low' in my opinion; I used to use about £7 a month worth of water in my flat in Nottingham. Here I don't shower every day, (shocking I know), I don't use a lot of water, I just can't understand how it can be so high.
  • Cutting consumption will save more money than switching tarriff or (if it's possible) provider. My partner saves all the water that comes out of the shower when it's warming up and uses it to water the plants. Also, putting a wrapped-up brick in your toilet cistern will save water every time you flush. Try your water supplier's website for more tips.
