Do you owe some money to them (since you say £97 is in line with usage)?

Well then you got lucky. If a debt on an account is older than 28 days the supplier may block the transfer.

If the supplier allows the transfer to go through a closing balance will be calculated once the final reading is received, this is usually asked to be paid within 10 days of receipt of bill, sometimes a supplier will allow a final payment plan to be set up but usually only spreading the debt over 3 months.

I rather think that you do not "get lucky" with a big energy supplier. They simply calculated a final bill of £173 and I told them that I couldn't pay. They immediately offered me 24 month payment terms with no interest. I had previously reported them to Ofgem, because I still cannot see how 2 people living in a 2 bed semi used £700 of gas in a year. The gas was only used for jot water and heating, the heating is turned off for 8 months of the year, and when it is on, it is turned to a maximum of 21C. We have a new (2 years old) energy efficient Worcester Bosch combi boiler, and we have loft and cavity insulation.
    NPower are scum.

Yes you can get lucky, depends who you speak to. I really doubt you will be immediately offered a 24 month repayment plan nowadays.

I'm with npower and received a rather odd letter today saying they've changed the date when my next statement will be issued and it will cover a shorter or longer period than usual:confused:. It then goes on to say future bills will follow in accordance with your current billing frequency.

I switched last December from Equigas/Equipower (part of Scottish & Southern) who to be honest were excellent, but npower came up on uswitch as being £100 per year cheaper (although this was based on the amount I was paying per month rather than actual usage:naughty:). In fact I am already paying £10 per month more based on one bill so far.

I'm already having serious doubts about npower and dont particularly trust them. I could well be switching back to my old supplier very soon;).

What do you mean by "nowadays", this all took place between May to June. My first payment is due on 1st August, which is tomorrow.
Do you argue simply for the sake of it, when you have been proven wrong on a point?

What I am saying is that most people will not be offered a 24 month repayment plan so somebody may read your post think they can close their account and be offered this payment plan when the majority of people will not be offered this. The norm at the most is a 3 month period to pay off a final bill. And my first point still stands that a supplier can and will block a transfer if you have a balance owing for longer than 28 days.

You might have been offered something from your supplier that's great but not everyone will get this.

This sounds liek a different situation to others on this thread - your outsanding balance was froma final bill, but others already have an outstanding balance when they are looking to leave.
Suppliers can object to a customer leaving if they have any outstanding balance over 28 days old.
