confused about getting broadband ...HELP !!!!

can someone help me understand getting broadband ....
currently we have ..... 2 bt phone lines .. each at £10.50? month rental ... one is our normal phone line which we use with 18866 etc etc ...

the other line we use just for internet access . ..again £10.50 rent ... and our isp is aol so we pay £15.99 ? month for unlimited use. (just to complicate things we have 2 aol accounts .. mine and then one for the kids .. so it's 2 x £15.99... and downside we can't go online at same time so if urgent one of us plugs into the other landline )
i'm aware that bt have recently announced that broadband is available in our village

THE QUESTION IS ... what do i need to do. what do i need to get ?? ... with BT as far as the phone line/s are concerned ??? ... and with AOL ???? ... and at what costs ??

thanks .

  • You will need to contact AOL to upgrade to broadband and they will send you modem and filters free I think with AOL. Once you have broadband you plug the modem and your phone into the one socket so you can then phone BT and cancel the second line. This means that you can then use the phone and the internet at the same time.

I used to have a dedicated internet line too and BT gave me a date about a week from when I phoned as to when the line would be dead.

If you are using two pcs you can link them to use the internet at the same time, see the Techie board and see Grab It board for a wireless adsl modem from PCW at £44.99, today only!

  • thanks edinburghlass..... i'm still not totally with it !!... #if i'm currently paying bt £10.50 month x 2 lines and aol £15.99 month x 2 accounts ... what do i end up paying who ??
One of the reasons we have 2 aol accounts is because i work all day on mine and the other one the kids and wife use as/when ... we can't manage with just one account.

Also... i thought that "getting broadband" meant bt digging up the path and putting in differrent cables etc ??

Also !!... i've just been looking at the aol site nd it shows various differrent packages .. silver gold etc but i've seen various postings on getting better/cheaper .. what should i be able to achieve ??

    thanks,
  • You will only need one BT line so that will be one £10.50 to BT. You will then pay to AOL whichever package you choose as you do at the moment.

No paths need to be dug or access to your home at all. All that happens is BT will activate your line for broadband and from then on you can use the telephone at the same time as the pc.

Do you have two pc's or just the one that is shared, as I still don't understand why you would need two AOL accounts?

Sounds like you need an 'Unlimited access' braodband pack.

    & only 1 BT line.

You're with AOL now, so, if you've been happy with them, may as well stay there. Plenty of techno expert Moneysavers may not be so keen on AOL, but I've a;ways been OKwith them.

You can still have seperate sign on accounts, within the one Broaband connection, so no need for extra costs, there.

In fact, you'll end up a few £$£$ better off, once you switch, 'cos you won't need the 2 BT lines.

Worth mentioning that you're considering another supplier, when you contact AOL, they'll probably offer a month of free access, to sample it!!

& no, there aren't any holes to be dug, just a few wires & a little box about 4'' square, to join up & put by your computer. It's easy - if I can do it, no probems!!

  • edinburghlass....
2 pc's ..my laptop in an upstairs office ..and the desktop downstairs in the kids den.

had to get 2 x aol accounts because even though you can have a number of differrent "screennames" on the same aol account .. you can't sign on more than one at a time ...which because i need to be online all the time it meant needed to have a seperate account.

I don't know enough about AOL to be able to help here but I would give them a ring and ask about broadband and linking up two pc's at the same time. I have just bought a wireless router myself and am about to link up two pc's for using the internet at the same time!

It does seem somewhat ridiculous that you would need to be paying two AOL accounts but I am sure with broadband there will be a way round this, good luck.
  • There is no need for you to stay with AOL and there are some much better deals too. You are going to save big time by converting to broadband.
If I were you, I'd do what I have done. I bought a combined wireless broadband modem and now I can connect from my home office, and the kids can connect from their laptop at the same time. The wireless part means that you can operate the pc from anywhere in the house (garden too) with no modem or network wires - Great !

I chose e7even (great service, very cheap iunlimited broadband) and bought a corega wireless modem router (cost about £70) my laptop is already wireless capable, but I needed a wireless card for the kid's laptop and I bought one from ebay at about £12.

    Good Luck

    yes, dump aol.
    dump one phone line.
get a ADSL provider (broadband) a few to chose from have a look at https://www.adslguide.org prices start from £11.75
    so= £10.50 for phone + £11.75 for broadband.
get a router which will allow multiple connections to broadband.

Personally I wouldn't dump AOL, ring them up and ask them for their gold package for £15.99 or you'll go elsewhere, they gave this to me recently and it's very easy to set up. Don't forget that AOL provide free tech support. You can sign on with up to two accounts at the same time with AOL broadband so you colud cancel 1 bt line and one of you AOL subscriptions which will save you £26 + per month
