Jo depends on what your budget is and where you are. We got married here

It's a beautiful 500 year old farmhouse restaurant that has a few rooms so small hotel, the food is fabulous, the location is beautiful and is has so much charm. One of the rooms "the old kitchen" has a huge inglenook fireplace in with roaring fires! It basically has a large conservatory, small "snug" bar, a lounge and the old kitchen. We got married in the conservatory then went outside for drinks in the garden whilst they changed the conservatory around for the reception. After the reception we went into "the old kitchen" where we had a casino set up whilst they again changed the conservatory around for the band in the evning. We had appx 50 guests and it was an absoloutely perfect day. Everyone was and still is raving about it to this day saying how fantastic it was. It was just so relaxed and there was something for everyone. SOme of the older relatives sat in the lounge in the evening catching up with other relatives, Other younger people were either playing at the casino, or dancing to the band or just sat in the snug having a few drinks. It really was perfcet.

I'm with everyone else on winter weddings. I'm getting married on 20th December as I love Christmas and everyone is always in a very good mood the week before Christmas. We've got mulled wine for the welcome drinks, and we'll have lots of candles on the table. The bridesmaids will be in wine coloured dresses, and the photographer has already been round the venue to establish the best areas for photos if the weather is not great.

I can't wait.....although I still have plenty to do! (Mainly getting the invites out this month!)

Enjoy planning, as the last year has flown by for me!

just reviving this thread to see if anyone has January wedding tips!
we have just found our venue and we've reserved a Saturday mid-January 2011. The choice about time of year was made as its the most likely time my sister can join us from Australia, and once we found he venue we knew it would be fab for a winter wedding. We are also excited to be doing our wedding differently to all the summer weddings we've been to! The venue is a hotel which has a barn attached. We are kind of blowing the budget on the venue and will try and make savings on other things! The interior is a timber barn with neutral carpet and the beams are decorated with fairy lights. I have checked, we are able to use candles as long as they are in suitable holders, and I like the idea of lanterns as centre pieces or dotted around. I have no idea on flowers - are there winter blooms which might be MSE? Not sure on colour schemes, though not doing seasonal red as thats what my sister chose and though it was lovely, I want to be original! ;)
Just wondered what other ideas and tips people might have for a January wedding?! :T

  • As long as you ask people well in advance I reckon doing it in December is fine. I went to two wedding last December and they were great, with varying elements of Christmassy stuff depending how you feel about that. A cute little white or cream fake fur wrap or stole with the dress and 'warm' food (think soup and roast dinner), and you're laughing. I love the idea of the roaring fire and mulled wine as well.

I must admit I've always liked the idea of a January wedding, at such a depressing time of the year it must be really nice to have something to look forward to. Probably cheaper as well!

Don't do Valentine's Day or Valentine's Day weekend though - prices will absolutely rocket, especially for flowers.

    Hi Jo,

We're getting married in Feb next year in North Lincolnshire, so well in touch with the Winter Wedding thematics! We found some nice decorator stuff on this site, they do props for television and stage shows and we're using some of the ice jewels, icicle branches etc to provide a little bit of winter wonderland to our reception:

Here is the link for the Christmas stuff:

And the Snow and Ice stuff.

Loads of things you can do.

    xx

Our wedding plans have just changed DRAMATICALLY since my last post.
Thanks to loads of problems with family, we've decided to suit ourselves and we're now getting married at Comlongon Castle in Scotland on 18th Feb - right in the dead of Winter.:j

I, for one, cannot wait - I'm in Sydney at the moment and it's 28 degrees today...would much rather be freezing than too hot!
