Which ISP to go with!? Help!

maybe its a better idea for me to go for a 1month by 1month contract until the end of the end of the summer? because that way I'll be able to see how much I use (and besides, I reckon I'd use it out of proportion during the summer due to holidays).. and also with all this talktalk rubbish trying to take over the market, one of the big players may indeed pull out a good deal that's worth looking into. my point is that maybe its sensible not to committ to a 12m contract just yet, because I dont know exactly what my usage will be, and also because the market seems a bit volatile at the moment..
sensible?? i hope so..
but what worries me is that if i go for a 1m contract length, will companies charge me for leaving?? and what about migraiton charges??
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!

I can tell you that IDNet have no throttling/restrictions/port blocking and that for the 30Gb allowance, they only count downloads and not uploads too (like most other ISPs do).Kamran wrote:Phew!! I know thats not ALL the options, but thats what I've seen so far. Can anyone see any major flaws in what I've seen? any inside info? like "throttling" or suchlike? or better still any clear cut winners??
This is strange, because most of these companies are ones i've never heard of. it seems that the big companies like tiscali, aol, bulldog, plusnet, wannadoo etc etc arent even close??
Companies who are well known don't have to offer a good product to get customers, they just spend money on advertising. The less well known ones tend to have a better product, because that's what they get reccomended on.0 -

The NewNet 8meg/25gig looks like the best deal for what you're after. It does have a £47 activation fee - I think that's the case for most ISPs offering 1 month contracts.
Have you done an availability check for ADSLMax (8meg) at your exchange? Try it with this link http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php
If you end up having problems with NewNet then after one month you could migrate out (to either IDNet or Zen, I would suggest) for free. Normally a 1month/30day contract means you have to give that much notice to leave at no cost - you can request a MAC and leave almost immediately but the ISP you are leaving would continue to bill you for another month/30 days: it's all in the timing.
To answer your earlier questions, migration from most ISPs to another is cost and hassle free these days - again, check an ISP's website for specifics.
Given the current volatility of the ADSL broadband market it would be churlish to sign up to a 12 month contract with anybody at the moment.
Another word of caution, before signing up with an ISP, read their T & Cs carefully, in particular any Fair Useage or Acceptable Useage Policy - just so that you are fully aware of what you are agreeing to.

TOG
p.s. Not trying to steer you towards anyone ISP in particular. FWIW I'm currently with IDNet although I've previously used Zen, PlusNet and MetroNet.604!0 -
I agree with TOG, I think that the best option is to go for a one month contract with Newnet 8mbps (25GB) at £17.95 + £47 setup. That way you can assess how much you use and if need be migrate accordingly..

I'm with NDO broadband, customer service, technical service and speed are excellent. Can not fault them, its only a one month contract and free setup aswell. You would have to pay for setup if you left within a year though. When i was comparing they came out as good nearly as zen. I get a 10gb download limit but there are packages with no limit aswell.
It really is a minefield though, i found that not going with the big players is best as at least i get to talk to someone that speaks english when i have a question.
Hope this helps.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
8mb is a con.you will be lucky to get even 7mb.0

Dr Emujuice that's a fair comment, but to be honest, you're buying into "the fastest possible exchange that your line can handle" right? of course you won't be downloading at 8mbps, that would be daydreaming! But it should be pretty much as fast as it can possibly go at the moment right!?0

Has anyone been with or is anyone with NEWNET? any experiences?
because i'm thinking of giving them a go, but obviously because it'd be my first ISP ever I'm kinda nervous
Thanks! :T

I think you'll have to pay £18.95 a month unless you pay in advance for 12 months.
