Profender is OK, but can be toxic if given orally(you'd be surprised at how many people ignore instructions!), or if they lick it (usually cos its applied in the wrong place) When I used it once on mine he was really off for a few days, haven't used it since.
Milbemax is pretty good, they have made it highly palatable, even my nightmare cat will take it in wet food, with no crushing, and its only 1 tablet when he needed to have 2 drontal (just over the 4kg mark) if you crush it I can't imagine it being a problem, especially if you put it on tuna or something REALLY tasty
Just a quick note about these "yearly" wormers etc, no worming treatment in a cat has a residual action-so it doesn't kill worms for 3 months or 12 months etc-its just if the cat is low risk for worms (indoor/not hunter etc) they won't need treatment that much more than that. My cat is a hunter and eats his prey, so should be wormed monthly, with a round and tape wormer. Needless to say, he doesn't as I never remember; you know what they say about cobblers children and all :D:D

Hi! Worming has always been a nightmare for us... my cat won't swallow the big Drontal pills (which apparently are bitter too!) and we find Profender difficult to apply since it is too abundant to sink properly in the right spots if your cat has a thick coat. Two vets we saw lately have recommended Milbemax which comes in smaller pills and not foul tasting. Unfortunately you need a prescription to buy it and vets, as usual, charge a lot more (nearly twice) the price you would pay from an internet supplier. I have just phoned to request a prescription and been told they charge 10 pounds for it. I know that, by law, they are obliged to give you a prescription, but now they have found a way round it, it seems.
    Any suggestions?
  • if the tablets are that hard to give, try asking if your vets do nurses clinics and then a get them to have a go, or try purchasing a 'pill popper' which are great little tools to help you

Thanks! They won't give the pills unless you purchase them from the vet. Also, you have to take your cat to the vets whenever the nurses are available and wait every time... I believe you are better off buying the more expensive pill and saving time and hassle.
Also I have read since October 2008 they have a right to charge for prescriptions... I wonder who was the friendly bureocrat who sancioned this.
I have heard of the pill popper but so far no vets have mentioned it or offered it. Will try to find out where to buy it...

just called the vet for a stronghold prescription. Wants £15.00! Forget that, cheaper to pay him his high price than buy on line...
