So basically, I need to ask nicely - and hope they agree to it...which they could.

But would they need to put that in writing?

If you don't need planning permission, it's not relevant as you don't need to ask. If you do, they will receive a notification anyway. both for the PP and the subsequent Party Wall Notice if you are granted PP.
Though it would be wise to discuss it with them before you apply.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    That sounded so beautiful :)

What are 'eaves' (forgive my ignorance - 1st time Ive ever had any work done - EVER!)
In simple terms, the eaves are where the side wall joins the roof - where the guttering will be (guttering is the plastic pipes for rainwater... only joking...!!)

It's uncanny, I was having lunch in a house in Portsmouth the other day and that picture could have been a picture of the house that I was in. However, I would doubt if that rickety looking wall could be utilised as part of the proposal, it is unlikely to have a damp course for one thing, or much of a foundation. If you had to build inside the line of the wall then the enclosed space would be so narrow as to be virtually useless. I would imagine that there are thousands of houses of that type that have had unofficial structures built to fill that space. Best of luck with your project. It would be interesting if you told us nosy ones what the final outcome is at some stage.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
