T-mobile and unlocking

I have contacted T-mobile about getting my Nokia 6280 unlocked from the network. I was on a contract and canceled it over a year ago, but loved the phone. They phoned me back and said that they wouldn't (or maybe couldn't?) provide me with the code and therefore I cannot get it unlocked.
As someone who doesn't know much about this, can they say no? I understand that they can charge me for it, but surely as I had a contract with them and therefore paid for the phone (so surely it's mine) they cannot refuse to do this?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers
Sian

theres no reason why you should be refused this. it is t-mobiles policy however to charge £15 for the unlock code.
as you have canceled the contract you cant get the code over the fone as there is no account to relate the charge to.
but good news is youl probably be able to get the code for free All you need to do it write to them as the following address:
    Subpin Team
    T-MobileUK
    Customer Administration
    6 Camberwell Way
    Doxford Technology Park
    Sunderland
    Tyne and Wear
    SR3 3XN

Include your Handset make & model (eg. Nokia 6120 Classic)
Your unique IMEI number (press *#06# on your phone to get this)
Also include a contact telephone number and your name & address (or alternatively, your email address).

I recently renewed my contract and upgraded my handset with T-Mobile and asked about an unlocking code for my Vario 3. I was informed, as you have said, that it would be at a cost of £15 which I thought was a little expensive. As a long time customer I thought I would have some chance of a reduction, no way. Just as I was about to agree and pay I was told that the code would be posted to me in about 28 days. I asked why it would take so long to generate the code, the reply was 'because it does'! Needless to say I told her what to do with the code!!!

I used a local independent phone shop who unlocked the handset for £7.50 while I waited. :T

It's worth it to search around your local shops.
