Lake Garda, where to stay?

We are going to Lake Garda by train in July are not sure where to stay as we will be using public transport to get about. Does anyone know which village/town we should stay in and any good accommodation. I am not too worried about finding accommodation but I am concerned about finding ourselves stranded there.

You can get about a lot by boat when you get there, there is a frequent ferry service around the lake. pick a more central resort to reduce you average travelling time.

    Here's some ferry info:

desanzano is where the train station is and it is a great base from which to explore the bottom half of the lake . it's a lovely town with a pleasant harbour .To explore the top of the lake however it may be better to relocate .

the hotel giardinetto is really nice and is only a short walk from the train station which is great for day trips to verona or venice!!

Hi We spent two weeks on Lake garda last June staying in the Park Hotel Oasi in Garda. The hotel has mixed reviews but we had no complaints at all. There is a strong German influence as the northern part of Lake Garda was in Austria until then end of WW1.

The local bus service and ferries from Garda are regular & plentiful. The staff in the tourist office & bus station ticket office spoke good English & were helpful. We used the boats a great deal & made our own way to Verona by bus which takes about an our and costs about 4 euros each return.

Wherever you decide to stay I would recommend Air Conditioning!! The local temperature was regularly in the low to mid 30 deg.cent in the evenings with no air movement whatsoever.

If you decide on a hotel check it out at http://www.tripadvisor.com/ & see if it has any customer reviews.

Wherever you stay on Lake Garda a visit to Sirmione is a must. It is a small medieval town at the bottom of the lake. You have to park your car outside the town as it is only permit holders that are allowed in. The pizza from the restaurants overlooking the water is wonderful. The hotels there are a little on the expensive side and the church clock is used as the early morning alarm for everyone to rise and shine:eek: but definitely well worth a visit.

Alexandra Apartments in Sirmione are lovely. On the main road to Sirmione and boat station (about 15 minutes walk along the lake). There is a lovely pool and the lake at the back (hotels own mooring) and front. The apartments have maid service everly day and some have a lovely balcony overlooking the lake, https://www.rossionline.it. The owner, Mr Rossi, can arrange transport to and from the airport if required. We have been 3 times and never been disappointed.

We stayed in Limone (the Le Palm, right next to the ferry terminal - lovely location really friendly staff) and would stay either there or Malcesine on the opposite side of the lake if we went back. Wouldn't stay in Riva at the top of the lake unless you are into windsurfing as there is a wind which gets up at the same time every day and blows like stink. Doesn't have much charm either.

i stayed in garda a couple of years ago in hotel garda, it was great, 10ish minute walk through town or along the beach path into the center of garda, and at the center you can catch the ferry to any part of lake garda, it runs often.

I stayed in Torbole. There was a boat from there to any of the other towns daily. The town was just right with just enough bars, eating places and shops without making it too touristy.
