Just to update this: I emailed Tesco and explained that I had proof of purchase in the form of a bank statement. They accepted this. They said that, normally, they would only give a partial refund as the product had worked for two years. However, as a gesture of good will, they decided to give me a full refund. Cheque received yesterday. Persistence paid off.0
