It depends on what sort of ticket you buy.

If it's an 'anytime' or 'offpeak' ticket then yes you can

If it's an 'advance' ticket then no you can't

Thanks for the precise reply. Unfortunately it's an advance ticket! Will need to look again to see the cheapest convenient return fare between Darlington and Telford for an outward journey am on 12th March with return pm on 14th March.

The person travelling does not use trains often so I was hoping for only the one change of trains.
