Rail Travel: Tips on Cheap Tickets

Ah, forgot to mention I need a return ticket! £18 is wayyy too much one way!0

When do you want to return? Same day? Need date and approx time to search.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

You will pay for a seat on an East train - regardless of who you book the ticket with. It relates to the train, not the booking agency. There are one or two exceptions - I think with advance singles it's included in the fare for example
As far as I know, this charge is being abolished on East Coast trains from next year, however, it will remain on National Express East Anglia. As mentioned, a reservation is always included free of charge on Advance tickets.0 -
Ah, yeah, same day. Leaving Cardiff around 17:30 or so.0

Well all I can find is £18.30 each way (return is £48.60 so 2x £18.30 singles is the cheapest option).
Forgive me for being presumptuous, but are you going for the Cardiff v Leicester football match on that day? If so, would it be cheaper for you to get yourself to Leicester and get the fans' coach from there? I presume they put on coaches for away games.
Alternatively have you tried National Express coaches?
Edit: Blimey, forget the coaches. Stupid times and what a rip off!I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

I seriously doubt you'll do it for less. What were you hoping for?0 -
From Eastcoast
Peterboro - Birmingham NS £4.30 each way advanced
and £11.30 each way Birmingham - Cardiff
so still £15.60 each way0 -
Try the X4 bus to Peterborough and an NXEC advance single to Newcastle from there - they won't be on sale for another month at least.
Coming back Virgin to Milton Keynes (you'll probably have to change) and the X4 bus again
Thanks for the info ... looks like I can do it pretty cheap!
However I couldn't find Carlise as a Station on the Virgin website ... did I miss something?I enjoy a pint of beer each night for it's health benefits. The other pints are for my witty comebacks and flawless dance moves.0 -

BTW, Carlisle isn't on their best fare finder.0
