I had one years ago.... If i remember you pull down the number of stitches you want the piece to be eg your cast on width
then you open out all the little pins so they are open
then you lay a piece of wool longer than the width across them all
then you run the threaded machine left and right across the machine and it should knit the rows

I have just found this that might help.

I have a brother knitting machine sitting in the loft and tbh I think it would be best to have a manual and if you can find someone who has a brother machine that can start you off even better.0 -
Vague memories of being 10 and using one...
Thread the carriage up with a 'barrel' of wool - it works better if you run it over a candle when winding it as it lubricates the thread.
Push out the needles - you should have a ruler type thing that does all of them and alternates (for ribbing) on the other side.
Take your line as wws says - HOLD the left end of it, check your tension and gently move the carriage along. After about 2 -3 full passes, the end is secured and you can get on with it.
- but you may have to 'spiral loop de loop' from left to right over each one to get it to knit first - it was a very long time ago!
You'll get into a rhythm - don't lose count!
There should be a bunch of tools for cabling, putting on dropped stitches and most importantly, a latch hook for casting off. When it comes to that, start slowly and before you know it, you'll be superfast.
I used to love machine knitting - detested hand knitting though - and made my first jumper - a beige tank top thingy - when I was 10!
If, of course, you have a fancy one, I'm lost!
So try You Tube as well.
Have fun - I'm jealous!I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Hi Kimly:hello:
I've added your thread to the existing one on knitting machines, to keep the discussion together
I can't seem to find the manual free , but if you google "brother kh 830 manual" there are various sites where you can buy it for £4-£5. Hope that helps.
thanks:)

I need help desperately. I have been given an Empisal (Brother I believe it now is) Knitting machine KH 836 with the ribber attachment. I am trying to cast on in plain stocking stitch but just cannot do it. Can anyone give me some advice on how to use this machine.0

Have you got the manual? If so you e-wrap the needles on the main bed for a closed finish and hang on the cast on comb and weights. I am new to this site and do not know if I am permitted to tell you about a woman on ebay with every manual you can ask for at a bargain price.0

Hi there,
I've just recently brought myself a knit machine and it didn't come with cast on combs. I've tried looking for combs on eBay and Amazon bit the only ones at a decent enough price are ribber cast on combs and I'm wondering they would be alright to use with a knit machine.
My machine is a silver reed sk280 if that makes any difference. Thank you0 -
Hiya,
Wondered if you could give me some advice please.
I am a complete beginner and never used a knitting machine before, but would love to learn.
I have been offered 3 machines and wondered if you would be able to shed a little light on which would be good for a newbie.
The machines are:
Brother KH836
Brother KH881
Brother Electroknit KH950
My thoughts are maybe the KH836 as it sounds the simplest.
I look forward to hearing from you very much.
