  • As I am poorly, I've spent the day reading this entire thread and have been well entertained:T. Thanks for the Jackie brownie recipe (sorry, can't remember who posted) threw it together tonight for OH and cooked it in 25mins in my remoska - great sucess.
Will catch up on last episode on iplayer tomorrow. Now the dilemma on whether to get the book...:D

Poor you, hope you're feeling better.
It was me that posted the Jackie recipe, I'm chuffed that so many people have liked this 'old' recipe:p

The lemon cream dessert they made last night is 'Lemon Posset'. It's an old traditional english dessert...sort of our version of the french 'creme brulee' & italian 'panna cotta'. I like to make it for special occasions because it's so gorgeous it does seem to guests as though you've been slaving away with eggs & gelatine for hours, when you do literally just boil it up & when you add the lemon juice, it miraculously starts thickening. When I first started making this, I couldn't see how it would work, but it really does & everyone always scoffs it down, so I can recommend it.

Got my book today and have to say that after flicking through a few pages I am not overwhelmed with it. I think it's more to do with the look and feel of it, I can only describe it as 'drab' with no glossy shiny pictures. Only 7 dessert / sweet recipes and two of those are the cookies that have been well discussed in this thread). If I had seen it in a shop and flicked through it, I most definitely would not have felt inspired to buy it. So anyone else who is in two minds, I would suggest go to a shop and have a leaf through it before committing yourself.

I like the format, it reminds me of the ministry of food by Jamie.

I like that its full of dinners & as thats what I cook daily.

I didn't find the book drab at all, plenty of pictures, nice clear instructions, unlike some other cookery books. We don't often eat desserts, maybe only once a week and it tends to be a tea-time thing only if we ate lunch early, so I was glad that section didn't take over the book. I agree it is a bit like Jamie's 'Ministry' book, if you want to see a really drab cookery book find a copy of The Kitchen Revolution, it has no pictures at all! Personally, I buy cookery books for the recipes though, not for glossy, 'staged' or unrealistic pictures, recipes I have made so far have turned out pretty much like the photos. :p

I don't want glossy pics, but I do want pics, because it helps you with the recipe to know what it "should" look like.
Also like you delighted its full of dinners I make nearly 365 days of the year & not weird & wonderful breakfasts, starters I make a handful of times a year & puddings I do once a week or less.

OH isn't a big sweet fan but loves cheesecake. He said last night that the lemon cream dish looked good and he would try it. Just wondering how much it sets. Would you be able to put it on top of a biscuit or pastry base? Or does it need to be set in a dish?

I want to give the bread a go at the weekend, I always thought that after is has proved the 1st time you had to knock it back and let it prove again. This wasnt so with the bread last night was it?
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!

  • love the series but somehow last weeks has been mysteriously deleted off the hard drive before I watched it, darling daughter I think
anyway slightly off topic and maybe this question gets answered later in the programme but I only watched the first ten minutes
the little girl and one of the parents was out shopping and he said to her what do you think daddy would like for dinner, which got me thinking if one of them is called Daddy what is the other one called ??
