But you didn't have to take it, if it was too much, or did he give you the 1.6kg a bit cheaper?

I agree that when you go in, you don't really know how much you're gonna spend, but I've never felt 'forced' to take more than I wanted.

I either go to the farm shop (slightly cheaper, but a bit out of the way) or the butcher (just down the road) and they're really helpful. Here's for our local shops :T

But if you asked for a certain amount it would have been fine to say that it was a bit much and could he put some back. I'm sure he could sell the extra bit to someone else!

So what? You don't have to buy all the meat just because he has cut it up for you, he can always sell it to someone else -you asked for 1.2 kg, not 1.6 kg

I watched that Virgin Cooks program, after seeing competitionscafe's post. It was car crash tv. The presenter seemed to be getting frustrated at the monumental task, and at how the 2 cooks were faring even before they were given instructions for the big meal.
I switched off before the end as frankly I didn''t care what happened.
    Roll on next Wednesday night.

    It's only a game

Well got brave & ventured into the butchers.
I said I wanted 1.2 kg of lamb to stew/casserole (for Navrine of lamb).
He got out a shoulder said he would chop it for me & get rid of the bones & excess fat & it would make about 1.2 kg of lamb.
It actually made 1.6 kg & he charged me £12.00, is that good.

I bought a shoulder of Lamb yesterday. I then de-boned & de- fatted it and ended up with about 800g of meat, the lamb cost me £5.80. So that works out to be about the same price, and the butcher did all the hard work.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.
