I switched off before the end as frankly I didn''t care what happened.
Roll on next Wednesday night.
I switched off as soon as they said "...and now on BBC3..." - call me cynical (I prefer to call it "seasoned by experience") but I now refuse to believe that anything made by BBC for that channel has any merit whatsoever.
Feel vindicated (though slightly saddened, given that the premise of the show should have meant an educational, entertaining series) by my decision now, given what people have said.
(as an aside - anyone who complains about the lack of choice on terrestrial, and how much better multi-channel TV is, should be sat and forced to watch and entire evening of BBC3. Their mind will go numb long before their backside will......)Oh come on, don't be silly.
It's the internet - it's not real!0 -
I bought a shoulder of Lamb yesterday. I then de-boned & de- fatted it and ended up with about 800g of meat, the lamb cost me £5.80. So that works out to be about the same price, and the butcher did all the hard work.
Brilliant thank you:j
Plus I think 0.8 kg will be enough for 3 people anyway & I get another dinner out of it:money:0 -
I am a grumpy old woman I'm afraid:D
I'm pretty sure you are and I know for a fact I am!
I'm so sick of tv programmes following a formula. Bring back The Onedin Line Colditz Upstairs Downstairs Downstairs or Play for Today!

That should be enough for 3 very meaty portions. I use 300-400g of lamb for 2 people, and there's always leftovers for at least one person's lunch the following day. The secret is in padding it out with lots of veggies, and serving with a starch too (mash or boiled baby potatoes are traditional, but I sometimes use couscous or even rice).Cogito, ergo sum.0 -
MrsE, you will definitely save money by going to the butchers rather than your supermarket! Well done, it's great once they start recognising you and you can be a bit cheeky! Sometimes he/she might even give you a wee bit for free!Lynzie Lou :dance:0

So true. My hubby goes to the butchers as it's near his work and he's on first name terms with them all now.
Haven't watched that Virgin Cooks programme yet, but we recorded it. Not sure if I'll bother now after the reviews. I can see hubby and I will be shouting at the tv!
BBC3 is pretty rubbish. It seems to be aimed at the 16-24 age group.0 -
Hi all
I haven,t posted since the first couple of pages but have been keeping up with you all and I have bought the book and it is great, have spent the last couple of days reading and making lists of things to try
The only thing we have tried tho was a bit of a disaster and that was the cookies they tasted fine but stuck to the greaseproof paper....I mean really stuck ,we were peeling the paper off the back as we were eating them lol
might try just putting them on a greased baking tray next time.
Hugs
LollyfinkonMarie and fabbing all the way

It's all very well having a bedrock recipe, but they don't allow for the unforseen...the kids and their friends demolished a large amount of 'left over local leg lamb ' while I went out to the post office earlier. There wasn't even enough for me to have a sandwich. I suppose I should be grateful that they didn't bin the bones, although one of them had been chewed and was in the bin.
I was going to do shepherd's pie. Their excuse was that I didn't tell them we were going to have it tonight. Lunch in this house is normally something along the bread and cheese/eggs on toast line.
I'm still seething with rage about it. I got it from a farmer friend. I always have to wait ages before it's my turn for a lamb, it's expensive, a luxury and I save it for special occasions. I would reckon on it doing more than twice as well.
If we didn't have a visitor they'd be getting bread and jam for tea. DD was away the last couple of nights so didn't get any."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I've got mine pretty well-trained I think -no-one touches any food without my say so.0 -
Well I got the book and had a go at the spiced chicken thigh recipe and the emergency biryani rice. Both were great and got scoffed up, so I'll do them again. However...500g of rice is a LOT for four and I've got nearly half of it left. Oh well...I looked in the freezer and there's some prawns, and the allotment has produced a real glut of courgettes. So I'll make a prawn and courgette curry (from my old Madhur Jaffrey cookery book) tomorrow from what I found in the fridge and freezer, to go with the leftover rice. Is that acceptable Economy Gastronomy?Val.0
