Several people have posted here that they don't ever/seldom make/eat starters and so to purchase a book with a lot of recipes for these in would be a waste.

Many/most/all starter recipes can be used as a main course/lunch/supper dish if served either as a larger portion or with accompaniments. St Delia suggests this for her Wild (grrrr!) Mushroom Risotto.

When I go out for a meal, I usually choose a starter for a starter, then another starter with a salad or veg, as I find main courses overwhelming in many cases. Lots of starter dishes are so delicious, I have no difficulty in choosing a couple I like.

And yet in America, probably the most litigious country, shops give lots of out of date food to charities. It's mad. If they can do it, why can't we?

Probably because there's not the demand for it, and so there's no benefit to the retailers themselves in doing it - if you get my drift?

"A shame" it may well be - yet who's bothered enough about it to do more than vaguely mutter about it?

Things don't tend to get done by people just moaning about them........
Oh come on, don't be silly.

True, but a few individuals writing to their MP's isn't going to make a difference. It would need a major campaign headed by say, a major newspaper to get things going.

....or, say, the fans and forum contributors of a a major, nationally-popular website?

    Just a thought......

I certainly would - if it was something I personally got wound up about. Mind, I'm not one of the people who talks at any opportunity of how shameful and disgusting food waste is.......

I'm not being perverse, I'm saying that there's potentially the critical mass on these boards - weight of numbers, number of good ideas, imagination etc - to get such a campaign going in the early stages; Martin would no doubt then be able to use the reputation and national coverage the MSE brand enjoys to roll it out and spread awareness nationally.

It's just making the first steps - as in any campaign - from moaning to doing. So who's going to take up the challenge, if anyone?

Totally agree with you, moaning does nothing but on here we have a perfect group of people who could organise a pretty big campaign! It just needs someone with enough time to organise it properly.

My dh started a residents group and later another important group and he and just 2 others do a massive amount of work. All we hear from people with suggestions is " someone could organise it" WHO!!!

I don't really think there is any need for a revolution over some wasted food, and anyway, the supermarkets would rather try and buy less in themselves than actually give stuff away for free;)

Right more importantly MY BOOK ARRIVED!!
It looks lovely and even dh was quite impressed, I told him I had bought it partly for him as he is going to cook on my days at work (once I go back) and he can only cook by following recipes:rolleyes: But he seemed happy with the book so that's good:)

    I have some questions please

I want to make the BROWNIES - Where it says add strong coffee, does it mean the just granules or the coffee made-up? Also can I do the first part in a food processor instead of with a whisk?
