Hi, Im asking on behalf of my ex. He hs been off sick since the middle of APRIL and is on full pay for 6 months, after that it drops down to half pay. I understand that he can then claim SSP to make up some of the difference to his wages..
He works full time and takes home approx £1600 a month approx I think.
The illness he has has not yet been disgnosed but his symptoms are pretty severe and he wont be back at work for some time yet.
Also, could his mother claim some sort of carer allowance for him when he claims SSP? He is having to stay with his parents as there is no way he can care for himself as he cannot even walk. She is having to bring him to his numerous hospital appointments and dr appointments but she lives over 30miles away and so its costing her/my ex a fortune. He has got temp GP nr his parents but they wont issue sicknotes, he has to come back here for those.
He has a rented flat that he still is paying all his bills for etc. Does he still have to pay council tax if he isnt actually living in the property?
Thanks for reading.

The standard rate for SSP is £79.15 a week.
If he has care or mobility needs he should look at claiming DLA0 -

I have told him that claiming DLA my become an option but he really really isnt keen on this, but as it stands now he cannot care for himself, let alone do his job. He just doesnt seem to be getting any better and is no nearer to a diagnosis than he was 3 years ago! ( the medical issues have got extremely more severe since April)
He loves his job and trained hard to be able to do it and I think it would be harmful to him to have to pack it in. Plus he wouldnt be able to afford his flat or bills etc.

What type of illness does he have? DLA may be a possibility soon.
" I understand that he can then claim SSP to make up some of the difference to his wages.." This after six months on full pay?0 -

His current full pay will have the SSP incorporated into it. The SSP will exhaust around the time he drops to half pay and he will not be able to continue receiving it.
Cont based ESA0 -
He would need to be getting at least middle rate care DLA for his mother to get carer's allowance. Plus she would need to be providing care for at least 35 hours a week and earn less than £95.
It sounds like he should apply for DLA if he has needed care since April and that is likely to continue. People on DLA can and do work so he wouldn't need to pack in his job if he were getting it - in fact his employer wouldn't even need to know.0 -
Really? I work for the same employer and was under the impression the full sick pay came from my employer and after 6 months then my employer paid half salery and the SSP was on top of that. I thought it was similar to when I was on maternity pay, it was my employer on my payslip for 6m and after that it said SMP.
Please forgive my mis-interpretations, ive never been involved in anything like this before. If that is the case then he will be up the creek in a couple of months time.
would he really go from taking home £1,600whatever pounds a month to £70-odd pound a week? or will he just have the half pay?..if that is the case then he is going to lose his home.
He has half heartedly asked about DLA but has been told that he doesnt have an actual diagnosis so would be hard to claim, even though he is now using a wheelchair and peein in a bucket because he cannot walk to get to the bathroom.May £10 a day challenge£19.61/£310Ebay challenge...£12.61/£2000 -

I didnt know you could work and claim DLA. His mother is caring for him full time, he now uses a wheel chair and on a good day he may make it to the bathroom. He is in terrible pain and doesnt sleep because of it. He is virtually immobile and I have no idea how his mother is coping.
All he wants to do is get better and get back to work, at this rate it looks like he will lose his job, lose his home and have to stay with his mother.May £10 a day challenge£19.61/£310Ebay challenge...£12.61/£2000 -

Nope, SSP has to be paid from the outset (waiting days etc)
So the full pay contains the SSP. Then he goes to half pay.
It is a qualifying condition of ESA that you are not entitled to, or have exhausted your entitlemed to, SSP so once he goes to half pay he may claim this.0
