In addition to what BT suggests please can you be more precise about what exactly you see on the screen that tells you VX2 is still around. What messages are you getting when you scan?

Also have you tried any/all of the steps in the first 4 posts to this thread.....

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133269

If you have what was the outcome?

In particular I want you to try to download and scan with Ewido Security Suite (in post #2 of that thread) and the two online scans here....

    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

    …and here…..

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com.

If you manage to run those scans please save the scan reports and post them back here with a new HJT log.

Also let us know if your system improves/deteriorates.

Sorry I have not got back sooner but life overtakes, doesn't it! Anyway, You were right. VX2 does seem to be gone now. Halleluah! But my PC is still very slow and it seems to take ages to respond to my commands. Also screen is intermittently shaky??? Also sometimes I action something like clicking on a file to open it and its as if my action is cancelled and nothing happens. I know there's still something wrong with it. Browntoa mentioned something about a 'lop infection'???

Anyway, I've finally downloaded Windows service pack 2 and I've pasted in a hijack log report which I just got by scanning in safe mode:-

Uh - I was hoping to paste it here but its playing up again. I'll post this and come back to post hijack log shortly,

Where do I go from here guys,

    Thanks again for all help,

    Cheers

I did a scan on adaware and found 25 tracking cookies which I deleted and then I did a spybot s&d scan and found further objects, one of which was 'winfixer'!!!! I've heard this mentioned on the forum as something nasty?? Anyway, I've fixed all these problems but not sure if thats sorted them? My computer seems to be getting worse as far as speed goes. When I come on this forum for instance it takes ages to go down the page to find things and the arrow freezes and shakes???? Its really frustrating.

Anyway, I appreciate all your help guys,

let me know what ya think??

    Cheers peops

    these entries are bad

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IMprocess] C:\Program Files\IM Names\IM-svr.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2Search] C:\Program Files\2search\main.exe

this PSP program is where most of the infections are coming in from

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BearShare] "C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe" /pause

have you run ewido since the upgrade to ??

    • On the left side of the main screen click update
    • Click on Start and let it update.
    • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode
    2) Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
    • Save the report to your desktop
if you have run ewido then just run Hijackthis again and correct the 2 items in bold above.

please only take advice from myself or Pchelpman about items to remove at this point :)

    Hi sloganjerry

First an apology. There was one entry in your first HJT log that I overlooked. I was distracted by trying to see where you had VX2.

    This one .....

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IMprocess] C:\Program Files\IM Names\IM-svr.EXE

...is undesirable and you also have left overs of a CoolWebSearch infection. We'll address these now.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

First, and in case you have anything lurking on the LOP infection, please uninstall MessengerPlus3! if you have it on your machine. I believe you can re-insatll it if you need it after you are fixed up.

Trouble is that the program comes with an "optional" download of LOP. If you ever said "yes" to downloading that LOP program this could be a contributory factor to your problems.

    Next, download CWShredder here…..

    http://downloads.subratam.org/CWShredder.exe.

Run it and instruct it to “fix” anything it finds.

    Download CleanUp! here….. http://www.cleanup.stevengould.org/

*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have a 64 bit Operating System (very unlikely) do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open HijackThis and click on Scan. Check the following 2 entries IF still present (make sure you do not miss either):

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\windows\SYSTEM\blank.htm

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IMprocess] C:\Program Files\IM Names\IM-svr.EXE

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers, before clicking “Fix checked”.

Delete the following File IF it still exists ....

    C:\Program Files\IM Names\IM-svr.EXE

Reboot your System in normal mode.

If you have a fast internet connection (Broadband) run online scans here….

    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

    …and here…..

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com.

When running the Panda Activescan make sure you click the Free Online Virus Scan in the upper right hand corner of the page under the Free use Activescan header. We do NOT want the default spyXposer scan.

Once it has finished save the Activescan log. Then post that log in your next post.

Please run ALL the free scans offered by Housecall.

Make sure they both perform full system scans.

If either/both scans find something they cannot fix - perhaps because the infected files are "in use" - please make a note of the file(s) concerned and post the details back to this thread.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log so that we can check if your system is clean.

    MOST IMPORTANTLY…..

Please also give us an update on how your system is operating now.

EDIT ... HA! BT ... you type faster than me! That C:\Program Files\2search\main.exe file isn't exactly "bad" but more of an intrusion into the user's privacy. Maybe it would be good to remove that one too, sloganjerry. Just add it to the two items to be "fixed" with HJT as I suggest above.

    Hi Both

I'm gonna address these problems later on and will get back to you on what you have advised, when I can get my daughter off the computer.

    Thanks for this both,
I've printed out instructions and will have a good read now before I sort it out,

    Cheers
