I was probably a little grumpy last night so my apologies.

I just wonder how many cars are actually legal for a test drive at any time (mainly) from an insurance point of view? You would have though there was an opportunity here to insure it and tax it on either a daily or weekly basis. OK admin costs would be relatively high but you would have thought the DVLA could make some money that way.

I agree with that. I imagine a lot of test drives aren't legal. The last car I went to test drive the guy made me bring proof of insurance and wouldn't let me test drive without proof. Fair enough I think.

My S.I.L went to view a van that wasn't insured for him to test drive, he just got the registration details and insured it for one day via the internet, it cost £18, but worth it for peace of mind.

He did buy the van, paid cash and drove it home all legally.

Why not tax it for 6 months & add it to the price, then find some temp 3rd party insurance cover?

I know I wouldn't buy any car without a test drive & with no tax or ins you're leaving yourself wide open.

Thanks for your help everyone. In the end he didn't drive it and has put a deposit down on it subject to an AA inspection. :)

    Fingers crossed for you Gaz.

There is. Lots of companies offer insurance by the day. Obviously it's not a cost-effective way of doing it, and it can be pricey, but it's easy to source.

Day insurance is possible but not for someone my age unfortunately :(

The buyer has asked I tax it for him so I've managed to get my uncle in law (god knows what that is) to get tax through his garage :)
