bank has physically lost my money

hello, new to this,

i live on an island so have to use a mobile bank, every single week i pay my money in using an express pay in envelope which is handed in with the business banking from my place of work when they stop outside. the envelope is handed to a person so its not as if its going into one of their express pay in boxes, i use the envelope the help speed up the process when they stop outside. as i work i cant go myself in person unless am the one handing over the money from work or have a day off, there has never been a problem and it has always been in my account by the following day,

but last week it never appeared and by monday i decided to phone them at first i had thought that maybe they where behind. they admit that they did get the envelope and have been looking every where, including the FLOOR of the van....

if they do not find this money what are my chances of getting it back? as it was an express pay in envelope i feel like i do not have a leg to stand on.

any advice would be welcome. although i have read other posts saying why the hell would you put your money in an envelope and how stupid are you etc etc, please bear in mind my nearest bank is about a three hour journey away involving various modes of transport. i get one day off a week and cant afford to travel such a distance to go to the bank in person and also can not afford to hold the money til i can go.

If they admit they have received it, then the problem would be the amount the envelope contained I would think. Do you deposit the same amount everytime?

They admitted that they had the envelope! Then where was the money? Either it was disappeared before they got the envelope or after....But either way, the chance you got the money back is minimal.

well now they have decided today that they never recieved the envelope and that the driver confirms this. they are lying and i cant believe this. i spoke to the girl the money was given too and she is now denyin ever recieving the envelope? what gets me is why bother looking for it for the last two days if you are so certain you never recieved it. i dont understand how she cant remember because honestly she wont have interacted with that many customers through out the day. also she is not the girl that usually comes. she only covers for this other lady. (sorry to call her she) the other lady is excellant and if it had been her she wouldnt lie like this.

i guess i have no case what so ever and can kiss goodbye to my 400 pounds. so gutted as its the most i have ever put it all my tips for the season so far :(

Sorry to hear about this, but it's because I know the very first time I use a DepositPoint at Lloyds it WILL get lost so I always ensure I have adequate receipt.

Is this one of those NatWest mobile banks from the advert? When you were speaking to the person that admitted they had the envelope, would that call not have been recorded by the company to refer to?

no its the bank of scotland. well they didnt say 'i did get that envelope' but they did search for it for two days, at first the girl thought it was cash on the first fone call, then when i said no it was an express pay in envelope and she said 'aa rite that explains it then, i'll go have a look' which made me feel a bit better like she knew where it would be. then on the second phone call she said she couldnt find it amoug the cash so she was getting the driver to have a look in the van, which am sorry if she was sooooooooo sure that she didnt get an envelope why would you spend two days looking for it and phoning all sorts of people (like my place of work) and because she couldnt find it she then turned round and said she never got it and the driver confirms that no body handed an envelope in that day?!?!?! so why would the driver go looking for an envelope that he was sooooo sure they never got? they did get that envelope and i cant believe their lying to me, surly their not gonna lose their jobs for losing the money? they must have some sort of procedure in place? i just want my money back.

They give thenm quite a write up. The only other thing I could suggest is that given the possible vulnerability those banks have there must be CCTV cameras which would have recorded you handing over the envelope?

  • hmmm good idea! i am just so upset as during our first fone calls she said things like 'as soon as i find it i will pay it in to your account' how can she go from reassuring me to then making out that am the one lying!?!?!

although i realise some areas have no banking facilitys and ive no solution to that ,but when the ad comes on the tv with the 2 women having a nice day driving around i cant help but think its an armed robbery waiting to happen ! its probably one of those ideas that seemed good at the time.

Do you have any solicitors on the island? If you can get a free half hour, a solicitor's letter might give them pause. (Although I doubt it'll be free).
  • Hi Cat, i see from your post it is not always you that hands over the envelope in person, was it you on this occasion, and if not, are you sure that the person doing the business banking hasn't mislaid/forgotten/ at worst, stolen your envelope?
