Which drill bits?

Options
Hi, I have a cordless drill, need to buy some drill bits for just some basic jobs - putting up curtain poles, possibly a couple of shelves...

Have a new build house so a lot of the walls are hollow but some of the wall around the windows feels more solid, block?? I believe that the metal lintels around the windows are only about 1mm so these should not be an issue.

Do I just need a selection of masonry bits for these kind of jobs??
What do you use HSS drill bits for?
Have seen a pack in Homebase of Bosch drill bits £20 reduced to £10, would this be a good buy??

Lots of this if you search the forums.

For your purposes, a £20/10 Bosch kit which has a few masonry bits would be perfect.

Thanks very much, I did a fair bit of searching, found a lot about drills but not much on drill bits.

HSS drills are used for drilling metal. You can also use them for wood but there are better drills for wood. Have a look here for useful information.http://diydata.com/tool/drillbits/drillbits.php
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Definitely go for a brand name set (not veyr money saving I know), I personally am currently using Makita masonry bits, IIRC Screwfix do a set of the more common ones (something like 10 bits, 2-3 each of 3 sizes) for about £20.

They really do work much better than the normal cheap no name ones.

DeWalt Extreme2 (again at screwfix - they do a couple of set as well as individual bits).. the best masonry drill bits i've had yet (better than my B&D piranha too). I got them based on recommendations here.

I used to work for a tool company - IRWIN - and they had a product called IRWIN Cordless which were specifically designed for Cordless drills. The same bit can go through wood, plasterboard, metal, brick and even slate and ceramic tiles. I think they were only available at Builders Merchants like Jewsons, but they may now be in the larger B&Qs etc. I have a set and they are great because you don't have to keep changing the drill bit every time you change what you're drilling into.
I recently sold a my spare set at a car boot for a fiver, so someone got a good deal!
